my DIY graduation pc under $1000

So the father says he wants to buy me a new computer for graduation, but i gotta build it. After reading reviews and roundups of parts, I've compiled a list that looks something like this.Amazon.com

You can ignore the various RAM i have listed, but that's what I'm aiming for. I do alot of AVCHD video editing in Vegas and music recording in Reaper, and on top of that I want to be able to play some Guild Wars 2 when it comes out. I admit i don't know a whole lot besides the basics to computer building, so I'm open to any objections. Mainly I don't know the difference between the 100 and 200 dollar motherboards, only that the Z68 is the latest and greatest. And when it comes to RAM, I'm clueless what is good and what is not. Any help with motherboard & ram please?

EDIT: Sorry, I believe this is already true, but thee motherboard needs a Firewire 800 port and the DVD drive needs lightscribe. And I'm not sure about what I would use for wireless N if i needed it.

You aren't going to find built-in Firewire 800 on a PC motherboard, you will need a card.

Newegg.com - VANTEC 2+1 FireWire 800/400 PCIe Combo Host Card Model UGT-FW210

I looked into my firewire device and it also works with Firewire 400 6-pin, which i believe the motherboards supports. I liked the Original Radeon GPU that was on my amazon list because it had two HDMI ports, although this Nvidia only has a mini. Is there a noticable difference in performance between the two?

Best Graphics Cards For The Money: May 2011 : May Updates

The 6850 will be just fine!

The P8P67 Pro has a standard rear Firewire port and a header for another port - either front panel or a slot plate adapter.

ASRock is utter garbage: it might be designed by Asus but it's made by ECS. You don't want to use G.skill memory what with all the compatibility problems it's been having and all.

Okay I'll stick with the Asus P67PRO, and I suppose stray away from Gskill RAM if what your saying is true?

After reading feedback on newegg about the HIS Radeon 6850, it seems like every card is hit or miss, and HIS has horrible service. Although Amazon reviews show no sign of this, I might upgrade to a more reliable looking Newegg.com - HIS H687F1G2M Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

or even the same Newegg.com - XFX HD-687A-ZNFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity which is $167 rebate with memorial day special.

XFX is another brand to avoid: XFX it's a division of Pine, which is PC Chips. HIS, on the other hand, is good brand. But if you're leery of it based on what you read, you can't go wrong with Asus or Diamond.

If you think HIS has bad service, stay far far away from XFX. You may want to look at Asus, Diamond, or Sapphire.

If you want a Z68 board, get one of the Asus P8Z68 boards.

Cases are a personal choice.

Kingston is good ram, as is Corsair, Crucial, and A-Data.

If you are going to be running the CPU stock or with a mild overclock, you shouldn't need an aftermarket cooler. If you are going to be pushing it, then you need the cooler.

So Radeon 6870, check.

The Motherboard is still questionable to me, I almost want to go with Newegg.com - MSI P67A-G43 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard but is that future proof enough? I don't even know what future proofing features to have.

I've also been suggested to change to a 1TB Spinpoint F3 hard drive, while upgrading to a bigger wattage power supply. Plus dudes at my dads work told me to upgrade to i7. Thoughts?

Not sure why the motherboard is questionable to you.... anyone that does any serious building uses ASUS... they just flat out work.

This forum seems a little bias is my point, all the Asus boards I've looked at have mixed reviews with DOA and no post. That's why I get second opinions...

The only brands of motherboards I'll use besides Asus are Gigabyte if I have to, and Biostar if I want a CHEAP board. Yes, we ARE biased here, but for very good reasons - years of experience.

Use whatever you want, all we can do is recommend.

You are getting some bad advice, in my opinion. You are on a budget - and there's no way an i7 is worth $100 more than the i5. You will not notice any difference whatsoever in games. A 650 watt PSU is more than enough to run any single video card on the planet and then some, and Seasonic-built Corsairs are the highest quality ones made. Spend your money wisely. I do not trust Samsung hard drives, by the way. I've had a lot of issues with them in the past. It says something when Samsung is selling off their hard drive division to Seagate.

And Seagate isn't precisely making stellar units either.

I've never had a DOA or failed to post ASUS board... an I think with the hundreds of machines I've sold with them... I had one return for warranty.

Thanks, I take everything with a grain of salt, but I believe I know enough to list the final build, I'll post it shortly. One thing, if all these rebates expire 5/31 , am I screwed? :P

Yep. Your invoice would have to be dated 5/31 or earlier. Let's see what this new month's rebates are.

Hal, I lost my first Asus board a couple months ago - a P5KPL-VM. It died 2 months after the 3 year warranty expired. One out of about 100 ain't bad, and that was a cheap $55 board to begin with.

We are bias because they work right the first time and last a lifetime.
Hard to tell the legitimacy of most reviews. You can usually identify the ones where people do not have a clue. Most tech guys I know don't even do reviews.

I just gave a working Asus P3B-F Pentium III system to the goodwill. I built it in 1999 or 2000. I built a new system for the nice lady. Never any issues at all.

Everything looks fine.

Newegg.com - ASUS VH242H Black 23.6" 5ms HDMI Full 1080P Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 (ASCR 20000:1) Built in Speakers

That monitor is only sale for the same price and is better than the one you listed.

You could also get a better case in that price range.

I would rather see you get 1.5v XMP RAM for stability. the memory can be overclocked if needed as well. Handle them carefully though, the heatsinks tend to fall apart if you manhandle them.

everything else looks good.

this is a killer case for the money. Nothing wrong with the one you chose though

So change to the vengence ram? Fair enough.

The case: I like the black interior & top IO of Rosewill, so it's pretty hard to sway me there unless you can match that.

And since it's on the table... which one is better and why?

While I'm happy with this build as it is I think there's some places to slash prices. The recommendations have been helpful but I'm willing to select cheaper solutions despite the quality choices. I don't doubt Asus has been a reliable brand for you but unless you have tried the products I'm changing to or have personal experience/word of mouth with the brand recently, please don't say "They're always good/bad." Justify.

You will more than likely be replacing that drive within a year. Keep it backed up.

good luck on the MSI board and drive. Don't say we didn't warn you
