$1000 budget gaming rig

Looking to build myself a new desktop for gaming for around $1000. I'm fairly flexible with this number as I'm going to be selling my current desktop for a decent amount. This needs to include a monitor (preferably 24" wide) but NOT an OS. Here's what I'm thinking so far:

Intel Core i5-2400 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz (3.4GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52400
Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2400 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz (3.4GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52400

Probably go with a Radeon HD 6870 (though is it worth an extra $35 to not get the 6850?).

8GB RAM

Haven't checked yet on PSU, case, mobo, HDD. Will do so soon.

Also, is it worth an extra $20 for this guy?
Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2500 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52500

Appreciate any suggestions!

ASUS P8P67 LE (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Not too sure about mobos, but this one seems to do everything I need and I've had two ASUS mobos before; no complaints.

Western Digital Caviar Black WD7502AAEX 750GB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Will probably take this HDD. Not sure that $20 will be worth the extra 250GB. I currently have a 620GB WD Caviar black from 2 years ago and it works great.

[edit] Too eliminate confusion I thought I'd add that I won't be keeping any of my current desktop setup. I making comparisons simply to measure quality, not to say that I want to keep anything.
