Questions for non gameing "future proof" build
Looking to build a new PC. It will not be used for new games, perhaps some older ones I already have (the latest I have is Doom, which I play occasionaly). I mostly use my desktop for internet, e-mail, photos, music and movie downloads, banking, and occasional office applications. I live in Ontario Canada, and would likely pick up parts at our local Canada Computers, or Newegg.ca and NCIX.com if need be. My budget is under $1,000, canadian. In my thread title I said "future proof", impossible I know, by that I mean easy upgrade ability if my needs change. I have pretty much decided on some of the parts;
Intel I-5 2500K CPU Memory Corsair 1333 XMS3 Classic 2X4 Gb OR Corsair XMS3 1600 Classic 2X4Gb. MB; Asus P8P67 OR Asus P8P67 LE HDD; Western Digital Black 1TB SATA 3 (6Gb/sec) 7200 RPM 64 cache Power supply; Corsair Enthusiast TX650, 650 Watt Basic keyboard and mouse, I have a 20" Viewsonic LCD. I am stuck on a video card. Suggestions please, on a $100-$150 video card. I know for my needs on board graphics would probably do, but I prefer a seperate video card. As mentioned above, no high end gameing. Also need suggestions for a case, mid tower, basic looking for $50-$100. It must be QUIET as my PC is in the family room and front USB 3.0 port(s), as the two ASUS boards have on board headers for USB 3. (for the future). I have a Windows 7 32bit upgrade disk (from Vista) from my old desktop, which I think also has a 64 bit version on it. Can I use this with MS's blessing or do I have to shell out for a new Win 7 Home prem 64 bit OEM disk?? Lots of questions, I appreciate help and suggestions. |

If it's non-gaming, just get a Z68 board and use the onboard video. It's at least as capable as a $75 card.

Thanks for the links on the two Asus Z68 boards. I like them, in particular the Pro for only an extra $10. Does anyone have experience with the on board graphics on these boards? Also any suggestions for a $50-$100 mid tower case with front USB 3.0??

The tests I've seen on the onboard graphics in the -K series processors rate them at least as good as the Radeon 5470, and the Z68 is better than the H67. The P67 does not support onboard video. As I said, you can always add a card if it doesn't do what you need.
Look at the Lian Li PC-K59 and the Thermaltake V9. Note that there is only ONE USB 3.0 front port. |
