Need selection help for a new build

It appears my daughters computer has bit the dust. After following the troubleshooting suggestions in Monte Russell's book "Self Computer Repair Unleashed" I have concluded the Mobo has failed, so I'd like to build her another computer. I built the current computer 5 years ago and the parts list are as follows:

Mobo: ASUS A8N-E
CPU: AME 3200+
RAM: 1GB Kingston Value RAM
Optical: Liteon IT
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 80 Gb
Video: EVGA e-GeForce 6600GT
PSU: Antec Smart Power 2.0 450W

I'd like to build a comparable system using newer components. I also suspect the PSU is going bad so I'm planning on replacing it as well. I'd like a good stable, solid system and I don't have any favorites (i.e. Intel vs AMD) - I just want to have something that will work well. She doesn't do much game playing at all that I am aware of, but she does us it for simple internet work, word processing, watching Hulu, and that sort of thing. Will someone make a suggestion(s) as to what I might build? Thank you for your help.

About how much do you want to spend? For the applications you listed something could be put together for about $1000. If you want something bare bones then perhaps $600 or so.

Thanks for your prompt reply, David M. Fortunately cost isn't a factor (after all she is my daughter and daughters always seem to get what they want from their fathers) but I do plan to reuse the case (Antec Sonata II) keyboard and mouse, and monitor since they are working fine.

OK, sorry about not posting a target cost for the computer. I'd like to keep it under $1000, especially since I will be using the existing case, keyboard and mouse and perhaps if compatible with the suggested mobo, the Liteon optical drive. I'm really looking for some help here as I need to get the parts ordered before Weds. as I will be away for about 2 weeks and would like to complete the computer shortly after my return. Thanks again for your help.

Hi

I'm just curious - I'm a noob trying to learn...

Why do you recommend a P67 board + video card instead of using the on chip graphics with an H67 MB?

Very good point - try the internal graphics before you buy a video card.
