Gaming PC with out the 'gaming'
Hey everyone,
A buddy of mine is possibly looking for a new computer but he's going to be on a tight budget. I was wondering (before I just picking things out) if (to save money), an old graphics card/IDE dvd drive would be worth sticking in the computer. His only game of interest right now is Starcraft II. He just wants more than 2 FPS.. heh. My idea was to give him my old graphics card so he can save the $$ on that part of it, and when later games comes out and he gets the cash I can upg it for him. The spare card I have lying aroudn is: BFG Tech BFGR55256OC GeForce FX 5500 256MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card Newegg.com - Open Box: BFG Tech BFGR55256OC GeForce FX 5500 256MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card Basically I wondering if it's a good idea, if that card could handle the game smoothly (even on the lowest settings). And the DvD drive also, I don't even know if new Mobos come with IDE! lol Thanks in advance, -Mike |

No to both. Today's onboard graphics are better than a 5500, and you can get a SATA DVD burner for 20 bucks. Not only that, but there aren't any more AGP motherboards out there for anything close to current technology.
What is his budget, and would that have to include OS, peripherals, and a monitor? |

I haven't got a budget from him yet, he needs OS, but does not need monitor/keyboard/mouse.
I really need to keep up with technology :P -Mike |

I just spoke with him and he said 800.00USD is what he wants to aim for right now. We probally will end getting a decent graphics card or use onboard and upgrade later if he does not want to push the budget.
OS is needed; mouse, keyboard, monitor is not I'm going to look up some parts when I get out of work and I'll post em. I think I may make two builds, (only build one), which are going to be an "over budget good graphics included" versus a "planned upgrade budget build". -Mike |

Damn you for beating me to the parts! I always feel like I'm putting my problems on other people when you make it for me. I'll be leaving work shortly (going to take a bit to examine everything on my phone), so I'll check it out when I'm home. By the way, he is in school for engineering, so having the performance a gaming pc (e.g. Cpu) normally does not require will help him, especially with all the modeling programs he'll be using.
Thanks for that timely and fulfilling reply. -Mike |

If he is NOT going to be gaming, we can cut back on the video card and beef it up in other areas.
Newegg.com - ASUS P8Z68-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52500K Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive Run the onboard video. It has a slot to add a card later if it needs one and the PSU is ready for one. The "K" series CPU on a Z68 board will outperform Radeon 5450's. |

Sorry, I must have been unclear with the title and my explanation. He WILL be gaming (that is why he is getting the computer). He just does not care if he can't play on max settings. As of now, the game he is interested in is SCII. He will want to run games later on higher settings, but right now he rather have a faster computer (for his engineering) than a gamer that won't handle the modeling programs.
So a gamer wouldn't require an i7 processor, but that is something to consider because of the alternate use. Gamers also don't require 8 gigs of ram (as of yet) but again, it is something to consider. I went over your parts, it all looks great! I'm just waiting to hear back from him on exactly what approach he wants to take. Thanks for the help, -Mike |
