Fast Work Machine

Hello. My daughter works for me and her PC just went south. I would like to build one for her and really need some help with product selection. I have reviewed previous posts and have come up with this configuration. My needs: budget under $1,000, fast multi-tasking, no games, fast loading programs (MS office, cloud applications). Very little video needs.

Two monitors are best. I did not include a video card because I do not know where to go with this. I have monitors/keyboard/mouse.

ASUS P8P67-M (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard $174.99

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52500K - $219.99

CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 (CMPSU-600CX) 600W ATX12V v2.3 Active PFC Power Supply - $69.99

Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $69.99

Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive - $59.99

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL - $76.99

LITE-ON CD/DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model iHAS124-04 - OEM - $19.99

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit - OEM - $139.99

This totals $831.92 without the video card. All prices are from newegg.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Tom

Change the gskill ram and go with crucial kingston or adata, and use the onchip graphics of the 2500k. In order to use onchip graphics you will need to change your motherboard to an h67 or z68 board.

Or for a more high end board the z68 is really nice.

With this, you don't need a video card, and it's $825:

Newegg.com - Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Newegg.com - Antec EarthWatts EA-500D Green 500W ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Newegg.com - ASUS P8Z68-V LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52500K

Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1333C9

Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Newegg.com - ASUS 24X DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS - CD / DVD Burners

Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit - Operating Systems

If you can stretch the budget to $1100, get this:

Newegg.com - Intel 510 Series (Elm Crest) SSDSC2MH120A2K5 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

And replace the WD Black with a SATA 6.0 Blue in the size you need for data storage.

A compromise would be SSD caching - with the 500 Black and this SSD:

Newegg.com - Intel 320 Series SSDSA2CT040G310 2.5" 40GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - SSD

That would be around $925.

GLC, I just ordered the kit exactly as you recommended. Since this is my firt build, are there supplies (cables, etc) that I need to acquire or will all installation parts come with the order?

It should come with everything - except you MIGHT need an adapter to install a 2.5" SSD into a 3.5" internal bay. It looks like the 510 comes with one but the 320 doesn't. SATA cables come with the motherboard, and mounting hardware comes with the case.

I'm confused by the 1.5V - 1.6V Voltage of the Corsair recommended and I hope someone will explain it to me. Why 2 different values?

This means it is rated to work with 1.5 volts meaning it is stable at 1.5 volts and you will not have to fuss with RAM voltage.

Just want to say thanks for the help. Machine is up and running and is blistering fast. Have not run bench mark tests but I can tell from my daily work flow that this is the best machine I have ever had. Appreciate the help.

Have run into a problem and not sure what to do. During reboot, I got a "CPU over temperature error." Entering setup, CPU tempo was 206.6 degrees, CPU fan at 1900 RPM (25% to 30% of total).

I am in a very cool office, have not overclocked, do not have a graphics card. Any suggestions on what I should do to troubleshoot this problem?

Thanks, Tom

Could be that the CPU heatsink isn't fully locked into place on the motherboard. If you grab the heatsink and are able to move it a bit , it's not fully atttached. Do not try to reseat the latching pins with the mobo in the case.

After reading different threads here, I downloaded a CPU temp monitor. Here is a dump for a minute ago. I believe everything is OK. Click here for review of temps.

Those temps look OK but you still had an over-temp message. Would still check the heatsink and fan connections.

Made sure processor/heat sink/fan were properly installed. Still had overheating message. Core Temp software I downloaded says temps are consistently 45-55C. I disabled the BIOS temp monitor. Hope this was not a mistake.
