Graphics Development Workstation Build

Hello all. I've been reading through the threads here to come up with a system primarily used for software development and computer graphics work.

Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Blue RC-932-KKN3-GP Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
$169.98

Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
$89.99

Newegg.com - SONY Black 12X BD-R 2X BD-RE 8X DVD+R 5X DVD-RAM 8X BD-ROM 8MB Cache SATA Blu-ray Burner BWU-500S
$129.99

Newegg.com - ASUS P8P67 PRO (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
$179.99

Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1333C9
$79.99

Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V v2.2 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
$114.99

Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52500K
$219.99

Newegg.com - EVGA 015-P3-1580-AR GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi) 1536MB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
$469.99

Total: $1,454.91

I have some notes and questions:
  1. I don't plan on overclocking
  2. I will be doing mostly computer graphics development so CPU speed matters for compiling/building projects
  3. I would like to have as quiet a system as possible, any suggested changes for the case or power supply
  4. I'm going to skip a SSD for now. May add one later
  5. I might put another couple of 4GB memory modules in later
  6. I will probably eventually have three or four internal harddrives
  7. I just picked a case from someone else's build in another thread

Any suggestions or changes would welcome.

Thank you.

I think you should go with the Z68 chipset because you are planning to add an SSD later. The Z68 chipset has SSD caching feature that will enhance write and read performance. Intel® Z68 Express Chipset - Overview. Asus and MSI are the preferred brands on this board for reliability and stability. I had 2 bad boards in a row but the third was a charm (it happens) ASUS P8Z68-V, very impressive board. The MSI Z68MA-ED55 (B3) worked great the first time for what it is worth.

Your CPU is a great choice. If your budget allows, consider the i7. It will give you an additional 2MB of L3 cache and 4 more threads.

I like your power supply choice but someone will probably tell you it's overkill and that the 650HX will be sufficient. I like the fact you are leaving yourself a little headroom for additional hard drives and upgrades. A virtually silent Power supply is the SeaSonic X750 Gold, high quality.

I used a Nexus Edge case for ultimate noise control and they work very nice. I wasted big money figuring this one out for my Dad, so my loss is your gain. Nexus Edge

Other cases; Antec Sonata III are very good as well. Any Lian LI case is fine as well.

Have you considered a Workstation Graphic card as opposed to a gaming card?

I think you could save quite a bit with a lesser video card - the GTX580 is a screaming gaming card and I don't think any graphics productivity software can really utilize it. I know that the current Adobe products can take advantage of CUDA, but a 580 is overkill - what about a GTX570? You could also save a bit with the Seasonic X650 power supply, that's still more than even a 580 needs.

I will be using it for OpenGL development so I don't mind spending extra for a high end card.

If you are using it for OpenGL, you should spend the big bucks and get a Nvidia Quadro or ATI/AMD Fire workstation card instead of a high end gaming card.

Exactly my thoughts! The GTX cards are gaming cards and are pretty worthless for graphics development.

This is the card you need to be considering for your purposes Newegg.com - PNY VCQ4000-PB Quadro 4000 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Workstation Video Card
