Diskless PC
Hi,
I would like to build a very small, very cheap diskless linux box. Sole purpose is to drive a monitor behind the receptionist's desk. I'm not sure even where to start. Thanks, Tom |

See if this PDF answers a lot of your questions and we can go from there. The hardware is a little dated but easy to overcome.

Good article. Thanks for the info. I have put together a newegg build based on the article. My plan would be to run ubuntu from a thumb drive. This box is still bigger than what I had in mind but it's not bad:

Are you going to hook up and boot off a network? Here is a non PXE PC Board does not match CPU... AMD CPU and Intel Board. Stay away from Ballistix memory... here is what I would do.... I do not trust the power supply in that case and beside it will consume more power than needed. Here is a good case/power supply off of the Asus chassis QVL List $83.98 (includes shipping) Antec ISK 300-65 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-068-_-Product Very stable and solid board I have used in over 20 builds. It is pretty darn fast too, don't let the specs fool you. Perfect Linux Box. Comes with CPU $69.00 ASUS ITX-220 http://www.mwave.com/mwave/deepsearc...0&FilterCatID= here is the overview of this excellent board http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Int...X220/#overview $27.99 Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-031-_-na-_-na $180.97.
