My second PC build
It's been about 5.5 years since I built my first PC, and now I feel it's time to upgrade. I'm not a gamer, so this should be a pretty standard PC for working with video editing, software development, and usual day-to-day use.
My question is how to pick a power supply? The case I've picked comes with a 500W PS, but how do I know if it's any good? Here is a link to my case: Welcome to Apevia.com | *X-Master-BL/500 I'm going to run an Intel i5-2500K CPU with a micro-ATX board - MSI Z68MA-ED55 motherboard. No video card. A DVD burner, a couple of SATA hard drives and 8GB ram. That's pretty much it. Any suggestions on if the power supply which comes with the case is good enough, or what to look for in a seperate PS? Also, recommendations on an aftermarket CPU heatsink/fan is appreciated as well. Thanks! |

Those power supplies are not to be trusted. I would buy a separate power supply. This one is a quality unit at a reasonable price.

My last build was a Pentium D 805, and the stock fan was loud. I eventually upgraded to a Big Typhoon and that has been great (ie. quiet). Unless the newer stock fans are better than 5 years ago, I'd like to drop a better one in right away this time.
Thanks for the PSU recommendation. I assume 380 watts is enough for what I'd need? |

Stock coolers are fine and better than they used to be. The Pentium D's were brutal on stock coolers, they ran hot.
Yes the power supply is fine. I figured it was around 300 watts max and I was being generous. however, if you plan on adding a video card in the future, you will not have much headroom. the graphics are very nice with the Sandy Bridge and you don't game so your good. |
