Vast memory options
My Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H mobo went nigh-nigh. Was out of warranty so I bought an Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 to replace it. I wasn't paying close enough attention to specs, so when I began to assemble the sys this morning I found that my existing DDR2 996599 - 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500 5-5-5-15 Blackline (Dual Kit) will have to be replaced with DDR3.
I seem to remember when I built this system that the CPU I chose had some limitations regarding memory choices (speed? frequency?) Anyway, here's what I'm assembling: Mobo: Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards- ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 CPU: AMD HDX810WFK4FG1 AMD Processors for Desktops: AMD Phenom I'm a Mushkin fan but I'm lost in all the choices available today. What's the max memory frequency and speed you'd suggest? PC-8500? PC-10666? Faster? Performance Memory - Mushkin Enhanced Any suggestions/recommendations are greatly apprieciated. Thank you. |

Go to that motherboard page at asus.com and download the memory compatibility list (QVL).
Without looking at it, I'd recommend 1.5 volt DDR3-1333 from Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, or A-Data. I'm not a Mushkin fan any more, their products these days seem to have a lot of quality and compatibility issues. I remember when they were the best - sadly, no longer. |

Thanks for your reply, and thanks for the info regarding Mushkin.
Quoting from the ASUS manual for my new mobo: AMD AM3 100 and 200 series CPU support up to DDR3 1066 MHz. I don't know what series my CPU is. Is it limited to 1066? Or, will 1333 work? |

Those are Opterons.
Here is a good set of memory for an excellent price. Newegg.com - Kingston ValueRAM 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model KVR1333D3K2/4GR

1333 will work fine, your processor is 800 series. All 4 recommended brands are on the QVL in 1333. Recommend you buy a dual channel kit.

It's marked Phenom II, not Opteron.
Again, there's a splinter in my mind, and the manual suggests a possible 1066 limit. I just don't want to waste time on something I can't use. Thanks. |
