Movie PC Advice
Hello, im looking for advice on building a media PC. its only job will be to hold and play all my movies on my TV.
my basic plan is - -HTPC silverstone case -win7 -micro ATX motherboard -i3 processor -4gb ram -450w silverstone PSU -GT430 video card (i already have) -1tb WD caviar green hdd -digital TV tuner card -remote **(is this overkill?) i dont want it to be connected to the internet. i have never used linux OS's could one work here?. im looking for a flashy interface to browse through my movies, iv heard XBMC is good but it basically requires an internet connection.. any advice would be nice cheers Last edited by next-apex; 07-17-2011 at 07:55 PM. |

I would not touch Samsung Optical or Hard Drives.
Here is a much better motherboard Asus P7H55-M/CSM You can get it here Amazon.com: ASUS Socket 1156/Intel H55/HDMI/A&GbE/Micro ATX Motherboard s P7H55-M/CSM: Electronics Caviar Green are solid hard drives for storage but I recommend spending a little more and getting a WD blue, they are faster. The case is very high quality but also has a high price tag, here is a similar case for about half but with high quality as well Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Centurion 541 RC-541-SKN1 Black Aluminum bezel, SECC chassis MicroATX Mini Tower Computer Case Which Power Supply you planning on?

For an OS Ubuntu 11.04 would work beautifully with what you want to do, you will need initial internet to get it setup but you can unplug it later, please keep in mind there are online updates for multimedia that will need to be done every once in a while regardless what OS you use.
I built an HTPC AMD rig for the kid's gaming room with Ubuntu, only issue I had with it was Netflix was not compatible but that was an easy fix, I made the machine dual boot with win 7. When you say locally, where are you? The i3 is perfect for what you are looking to do but by no means overkill. |
