New Build - Comments Requested
I am putting together a build to be a general purpose home PC. Occasional gaming, but mostly used for surfing, word processing and occasional programming.
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD3-B3 LGA 1155 - Currently unavailable at Newegg. Alternatives welcome or I could find it from another online retailer... CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 or Intel Core i5-2500k Is there a noticable performance boost between the 2? Again, the machine won't be under heavy load often. Ram: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB - I'm also considering the 16G version of the same memory. HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive SSD: OCZ Agility 2 OCZSSD2-2AGTE60G 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - used as a HDD Cache Graphics: EVGA SuperClocked 01G-P3-1563-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti - I want it to be a good card, powerful enough to future proof it for a while, but it doesn't need to be the biggest or baddest on the market. Case: Antec One Hundred Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case PSU: COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M600 RS-600-AMBA-D3 600W ATX12V V2.3 DVDRW: LG DVD±RW SuperMulti Drive OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit Any alternatives, suggestions welcome. As speced, the cost is about $950. |

They are both great CPU's and for your intended use, the i3 is fine. There is a noticeable difference between the two though as the i5 K series is a quad core and has a more advanced integrated GPU, and unlocked multiplier. If you can afford it, the i5 is great CPU.
I use Intel 510 series SSD's and load the OS and applications on them. If you are looking for caching drive, this one will be good (Sata III) Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Newegg.com - Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) You want a high quality power supply and that one may be but I do not trust the brand SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W ATX12V Newegg.com - SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply |

16GB of memory would be a waste of money for your needs!
I would say 8GB tops. Here is the motherboard you want Newegg.com - ASUS P8Z68-V LE LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS The power supply jdeb picked is the best you can get. I would not bother with the i5, the i3 will be overkill for what you described you will be using the computer for.

If you can afford it, get a quad core - even if it's just the i5-2300. Better futureproofing!
