Architecture student workstation build help/2500$

I need help to build a workstation for architectural uses. I mainly use Photoshop, illustrator, Indesign, 3Ds, Vray, Autocad and Sketchup. I also multi-task a LOT.

Budget: about 2500$
Purchase Date: 1 week
SLI or Crossfire: NO
OC: maybe

I’d like to start with this configuration that I’ve found after some researches. I was wondering how I could optimize it for my uses and my budget.

Motherboard: Asus P6X58D-E, Intel X58 (220$)
GPU : 2GB ATI FirePro V7800, 2x DisplayPort/ Dual Link DVI-I (630$)
CPU : Intel Core i7 980, 3,33ghz six cores (12 threads) (600$)
RAM: 12GB (3x4GB) Corsair XMS3, DDR3 1600Mhz (105$)
HDD: 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black, SATA 6Gb/s, 64MB Cache (90$)
SSD: Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC128MAG-1G1 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (250$)
CPU COOLERS: Prolimatech Megahalems (70$)
PSU: 650W Corsair Professional CMPSU-650HXUK (110$)
Case : Antec P183 V3 (140$)

Total: 2215$

Thank you

Welcome to pcmech.
The new i7-2600K is a much better processor than that older i7 problem plagued X58 chipset based. I will let one of the Intel fans give you advice on the rest of the components.

OS: Windows 7 64 bit? Home Premium or Professional?

Video: The software you are running may benefit from Nvidia's CUDA technology, and if so, you may want to get a gaming card such as a GTX 570. That's going to be cheaper than a workstation card.

Thank you.
Does the 2600k render as fast as the 980 with Vray in 3ds Max and is the price difference really worth it? Should I change my mobo and take one for two processors, and put one intel XEON and maybe two later if i need an upgrade?

EDIT: My OS will be windows7 64 bits professional. Also, i forgot to mention that I don't intend to play games with this workstation. How does a gaming card perform compare to workstation card?

If you are going with Dual processor board start with both at the same time. If you are going to go with multi CPU I would also consider AMD, you can build them up to 24 core like the one I have in my sig but honestly I think what glc recomended to you will work great.
Here is the answer to your question about the difference between the 980x and the 2600k

It all depends on the software that you want to run. That's why I said this would be open to (a lot of) further discussion. If your software is enhanced by Nvidia's CUDA processing, a gaming card such as a 570GT may be the way to go. If not, then an ATI Fire such as you posted originally may be a better choice.

You convince me and I'll take the 2600k. So, here's my updated system. I want to do GPU renders with VRay 2.0 RT so I chose an Nvidia gtx 580 with 3gb. My scenes are not very large and it has 512 cuda cores, so it seems perfect for me.

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V (200$)
GPU : GTX 580, 3gb, 512 CUDA cores(590$)
CPU : Intel Core i7 2600k (315$)
RAM: 16GB 2 sets of (2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance(122$)
HDD: 2TB Western Digital Caviar Black (90$)
SSD:Intel 510 120gb (SSD) (277$)
CPU COOLERS: Hyper 212+ (30$)
PSU: 650W Corsair Professional (120$)
MONITOR: ASUS VH238H Black 23" (190$)
OS:Windows 7 pro 64 bits (50$ student version)
Case: Antec P183 V3 (140$)
OTHER: ASUS 24x DVD Burner (21$)
Total: 2210$

The GTX 570 has 480 CUDA cores and only costs about half of that 580.........and the ones that are factory overclocked approach the performance of a 580.

The 570 will do great for you, I wouldn't even bother with factory overclocked.

Then I'll go with the 570 GTX. I can still spend some money so should I put two of them? Does 3ds max 2011 support SLI and is my PSU enough for this?

No, SLI is for the gamers. Bank the excess money or upgrade something else. You could upgrade to the 250gb SSD.

Newegg.com - Intel 510 Series (Elm Crest) SSDSC2MH250A2K5 2.5" 250GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Might not be a bad idea to add another small SATA hard drive to use for a dedicated Photoshop scratch drive.

The motherboard comes with 4 SATA data cables, the SSD comes with one. You shouldn't need anything else.
