New Build, Your Input Much Appreciated...

Building a new computer for the following purpose: Running a small online business, mostly entailing office applications (excel, word), general family use like web surfing, streaming video, music, file storage, not much gaming if at all. I need it to run two 23” monitors, I’d like to set up a RAID 1 array for constant backups of files, and I’d like to use a SSD for the OS and a few other applications.

This is what I’ve come up with, I’d appreciate your feedback on compatibility, and if there are better options, something I’ve missed etc. without straying from the budget. Thanks in advance for your help:

You may be compromising quality with some of your choices. Could you please give us a maximum budget for all the listed components? A few more questions:

1. Is Blu-Ray necessary?
2. Is RAID 1 necessary? A single drive with an external for backup is safer.
3. Is a dedicated SSD necessary?

Stay away from Asrock. For business you definately want to go with an Asus motherboard.
G-Skill is not a recomended brand, we recomend Crucial, Kingston, Corsair and A-Data.
Hanns-G Monitors used to be good but their quality has dropped drastically in the last 2 years, go with an Asus or Samsung when it comes to monitors.
Even though I like Hitachi Deskstar hard drives I still prefer western Digital, Black is best.

I'd like to have the Blu-Ray for movies, so let's keep that,

RAID 1 for seamless backup of family movies and pictures, I don't want to have to manually backup anything, and still have everything safe, is there a better way to do this and still be automatic?

The SSD is so that if I have to reinstall the OS because of viruses and such, I don't have to think about drives and partitions, I just want to keep reinstalls as simple as possible....and I'd imagine the dedicated SSD would make the computer faster at startup, etc, and commonly used programs like excel and word....

Can you recommend an ASUS Mobo that is compatible and is about the same price?

I will look into Corsair memory, I've had good luck with it, shouldn't dent the budget much...

Anyone weigh in on the Western Digital drives? I have a really bad taste in my mouth from an issue, albeit several years ago. Are they much more reliable lately?

Okay - now, about the maximum budget figure? Give me a chance to analyze the whole system instead of addressing things piecemeal.

The problem with a RAID 1 is if you get file system corruption, both drives are corrupted. The *ONLY* thing a RAID 1 protects you against is a single physical drive failure. You also risk a problem if the whole computer takes a hit. An external that you only connect when it's time to do a backup is safer.

Reinstalls are easy even with partitioned drives if you use an image-based backup system. This is much easier than a reload and reinstall from original media.

Everything I came up with added up to about $1260.00, which is within the budget (somewhere around $1250). I certainly wouldn't have any problem spending less, but recommendations that ADD to this figure would really have to be for a good reason...

For $1250 glc will list you a great build. That is a lot of money for a non-gaming rig! I would also start with 1 x 2TB hard drive unless you already have enough to fill 4TB, you can always add more Hard Drives are only going to get cheaper and bigger.

That would be much appreciated. The 2 x 2TB drives were for a RAID 1 array purpose, not for a total of 4TB of disk space.

GLC is recommending against setting up a Raid 1 storage system, something which I kind of had firm in mind, so it would be great to hear some arguments for or against. I tend to get forgetful doing manual backups, so I thought this would be a good solution.

So for 1250, this is what I need to get accomplished: The ability to run dual 24 inch monitors (1920 x 1080 each), a good automatic way to accomplish backups of data, and the capacity to work with huge files, like excel docs with millions of cells filled. (These documents currently take a LONG time to open, save, and work with) --- This is another reason why I wanted a dedicated SSD drive for OS and office apps, hoping to cut this read write time considerably. So......looking forward to getting some help...thanks again in advance!

I like Raid 1 but only when a quality controller is used.
I don't like to use any form of Raid with the onboard motherboard Raid controller.

I think that is why glc is advising against it, adding a quality raid controller will up your budget a lot.

This is the motherboard glc been recomending for sandybridge builds

Nope - not when it has to include two 24 inch monitors, a backup system and a Windows operating system. This is going to be tough with quality parts. I'll see what I can come up with.

EDIT: Right now I'm at 1500 bucks.

I was thinking the OP going to scratch the SSD and the second hard drive after you made the recommend NOT to go with Raid 1.
Also he can always add an external hard drive at a later time.
I am highly against using SSD in business machines, reliability factor is still an issue.
Quality is paramount and I think going with anything other than an Asus for this rig would be a mistake.

Newegg.com - Acronis True Image Home 2011

Newegg.com - IOGEAR GHDMIMDVIF Gold-plated HDMI (M) to DVI-D Dual Link (F) Adapter

NOTES:

The i3-2105 processor has the upgraded onboard video. Along with a Z68 board, it can drive 2 monitors, one on DVI and the other on HDMI, that's why the adapter. That's also why no video card specified (you can add one later if you find you need it) and I upgraded the PSU a bit to allow for that.

I reluctantly specified the Hitachi drives - you can't beat the price. Put the second one in the Rosewill enclosure, connect it via USB 3.0, and use the Acronis software to do your backups. It can be scheduled.

The SSD is NOT for your OS and apps, it's to use as a cache for the hard drive - that's a Z68 feature. It will improve performance over just a hard drive.

I'd prefer to spend a bit more for the LED backlight version of those monitors.

Thanks GLC, Khalil, soon as I have a chance I will look into each of the components you have suggested, some final decisions to make regarding backups and drive setup, I may have one or two more questions, much appreciated....
