First Build Help!

Hi there as you can see from my posts i'm new to both this forum and building computers!

I just want to get your guys ideas to see if i'm heading in the right direction so far i'm looking at:

Motherboard: ASUS 1155 P8Z68-V PRO S/L
Processor: Intel Sandybridge i7-2600K
CPU Fan: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU Cooler
Ram: Corsair CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9 16GB 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 Vengeance Memory

As you can see i have a long way to go. i want a reasonably good graphics card for around £300-400.
I Have no idea about a power supply, case, cooling, DVD/Blu-Ray drives, Solid State drives so looking for help to build the perfect machine!

Hope i'm not getting too ahead of myself!

Welcome to PCMech!

What is your total budget? Who will be your supplier in England? What will you be using the computer for?

I will probably be buying components from Amazon and my budget would be around 1500-1800. I'll be using the PC for Gaming and eventually HD video/photo editing

British pounds or US dollars? ...and purchased as if you lived in the US or inside the UK? Some US vendors will not ship outside the country. How do you plan on making your purchase in that respect?

That is a big budget. You can get an excellent gaming machine for around 1500-1800 USD. Is your budget including monitors? You could buy up to three decent monitors with the difference.

Well, the 580 is the strongest single processor gaming card made. The 2600k is the fastest processor made without spending HUGE money.

It will handle anything and then some. The question would be what could I throw at it to make it run slower...

Only with a multiple monitor setup would you ever want a faster graphics card. (a 595 or a 6990)

If you think you might like to overclock, you may want to add an aftermarket CPU heatsink. The 2600K with a UEFI BIOS is very easy to overclock. You can easily get into the upper 4GHz range and have it stable.

Consider a monitor so you do not have to watch it on a television all the time. TV's are generally not as sharp as a good monitor. With a KVM switch you can switch the image between the two. A decent quality 1920 x 1080 monitor is in the upper 200's USD.

The 27" Asus looks sweet! i will keep you guys updated when i have purchased some of the parts it will take me a few months to afford all this but i really appreciate the help!

I'm going to stick around reading forums to see what i can pick up about building a computer and overclocking! Console gaming isn't doing it for me anymore need something more hardcore!

I never could get used to console games and therefore never cared to play them.

Sorry for the off topic but is it the pound higher in value right now than the dollar?

and in time would i be able to have 2 of these graphics cards in the system?

Thanks!

Yes, it will run on integrated graphics.

Yes, you can run 2 580's, but not with THAT power supply - you would need about 1000 watts.

If you want to save some money, get a GTX 570 instead. That's still a strong card.

You could also downgrade to a 2500K CPU, and you could get only one ram kit - 8gb is still a lot of ram.

I don't want to sacrifice any of the other parts i will just have to be patient. i have been looking at the HD RADEON 6990 or the Geforce GTX 590

Now i know these cards are enthusiasts cards and they are expensive, with the setup above would these cards fit in or would i need a better PSU because I've seen reviews and both cards are 400w under load ( correct me if i'm wrong)

Any help on the topic is appreciated

Thanks!

For a single 6990 or a 590 you want a 750 watt PSU because they are dual GPU cards causing them to draw more power.

The 400 watt figure is for the card itself and does not include what the rest of the computer draws. The 6990 can actually draw somewhat more than 400 watts when the overclock BIOS is switched on. This card has two BIOS's.

The 6990 requires 12 inches of clearance.

With all this in mind then what sort of a case would you guys recommend would the 6990 (being the longer of the two cards) fit. I have been looking at Antec Dark Fleet DF-85 Case and according to this video review the maximum length of the graphics card is 12" or 30.5cm

Something else i was thinking about as well would be going for Windows 7 ultimate as apposed to home premium. Let me know what you think

I dont know! ultimate sounds cooler

The question you need to answer is why would you need it?

Computers do not like to get wet so it is generally best to keep water out of the box. For the vast majority of computers it is just not necessary.

Hi guy just wondering if i would be able to save £50 by swapping out this Intel 120GB SSD and replacing it with a Crucial 128GB SSD i know obviously ill be dropping the read and write speed but there will still be a significant different in boot up and loads times

What do people think?
