Assembled new build, fans start then stop
Ok - I am using the components from this thread - i.e.
Asus P8Z68-V LE LGA 1155 Intel Z68 board, i5-2500k cpu, Corsair Vengeance 2x4gb DDR3 1600 RAM, 380watt Antec Earthwatts PSU, WD Caviar Black 1TB 6.0 G/sec HDD, Sony Optiarc DVD burner, Coolermaster 690 case. I assembled it today; when I turned on the power, the cpu and chassis fans started up, then stopped after a second or so. Following the "Problems with a new build?" procedure, I removed the mother board from the case, put in 1 stick of RAM, attached PSU and monitor, and shorted the power switch connector on the motherboard. (I did not remove and reattach the CPU & heatsink). CPU fan started, then stopped as before. I tried the other stick of RAM, in the other DIMM slot, and got the same result. What should I look at first, and second? Thanks for your help!!

Do you have the 8 pin CPU connector plugged into the motherboard? Are all 4 heatsink pins fully snapped down into the motherboard?

um - well, no, I didn't have the 8pin connector in! That did the trick!
Except there's another problem now that I've installed Windows7 and the drivers from the motherboard disc - no sound. |

Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage." Then go to "Device Drivers." Do you see anything unusual?

According to Device Manager, everything's working properly; the sound controller says "Realtek High Definition Audio" - and the drivers came from the motherboard CD. I don't have a soundcard.

Go into the Realtek sound manager and make sure you have the jacks set up correctly and the speakers are plugged into the correct jack.

Make sure you update drivers from there website. That should resolve all your driver problems.

I couldn't figure out anything from the Realtek audio manager.
I use headphones, plugged in the front panel. When I was assembling the system yesterday I plugged the AC'97 wire, not the high def audio, into the front speaker connector, because the hidef didn't reach the connector on the board. The BIOS sets the front speaker sound as HD by default. So today I changed the BIOS setting to AC97. Then I plugged speakers into the back panel, and they worked! I went into the Realtek Audio Manager again, and this time it showed a recommendation and a radio button to change the front panel jack to AC97. I did that, and it reloaded audio devices - and the headphones work now! yay! When I have a bit of time I'll open up the case and see if I can make the front jack HD. ![]() Thank you so much! |
