game recording rig
Hi
![]() I need a computer that can run and screen capture (with fraps) games like Minecraft and Portal. I won't be running games that are extremely graphics-heavy, but I want "basic" modern 3d games to run well. HDD: primary for os & apps, secondary for video editing "scratch disk" (do not want ssd) OS: windows 7 64 personal Audio: "Built-in mobo sound" or whatever its called is fine... it's just gonna be playing off stereo speakers. Case: prefer cheap and functional over bells and whistles... don't want it to overheat or be really noise-y though Optical drive: dvd burning, no blu ray necessary Extra: Capture card with composite & s-video (don't really need hd capture... but coax would be cool for media center) I don't really have a "budget" per se... I really just want to get exactly what I need and nothing more. I'm thinking ballpark $800 for box, but higher is fine if necessary. I have no idea what things cost these days this is replacing a 10 year old pentium 4 computer. Sorry this post got so long -- just wanted to make sure I covered everythingThank you so much!! |

What software are you using for your video editing? Also I have never heard of windows 7 personal, I would recommend windows 7 professional.

Thanks for the list glc I'll see if anyone offers up any capture card opinions, but if not I can probably pick one myself based on newegg reviews. I'll probably order the parts tonight.Oh, and I noticed you chose an Intel CPU... would this be a comparable AMD: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor or would this be one step up Intel: Intel Core i5-2400 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz (3.4GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor I've heard that quad core can be useful for fraps because it can be assigned a different core than the game (dunno if that makes any sense... not entirely sure what a "core" is). |

If you are using Adobe, replace the video card with this:
Newegg.com - ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card Can't answer your AMD question as I don't do AMD builds. If you do go AMD, you will of course need a different motherboard. The Intel 2400 would be a good choice if you want a quad core. |

Ordered.
Got it with the i5 and geforce 460. I also got a higher wattage psu and 2tb instead of 1.5tb for the 2nd hd. I went with the avermedia capture card in glc's post because the reviews for the hardware were positive. Total was $1000 w/ about $100 in rebates happiness

PSU: Antec EarthWatts EA-650 GREEN 650W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive Most of the specs besides wattage and space looked similar for these two. Do they look ok? If I got something that won't work properly or as well as the ones you recommended, then I can always return it unopened and get the EA-500D or WD15EARX at a Fry's electronics store. |

Ok got it all hooked up. Couldn't find a way to connect the front mic ac97 input into the motherboard, but everything else is in it's proper place. Installing windows now =)
BIOS said "CPU fan error" when I first turned it on, but all the fans are spinning and it hasn't given that error again. Will update y'all if there are any problems. Looks good so far, though! Thanks again for all your help <3 Alison |
