So I have finally decided to on building my first pc. At first I was a little worried about finding the right parts and making sure they are compatible with each other. Here is the list of what I have so far:
Case // Rosewill Challenger // $54.99 (Will this case have the fan power and room to cool my system? or should I go with the Sonata lll or something better?) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ID=862686&SID= http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...M/mysuperpc-20 PSU // Antec Earthwatts 750-Watt Power Supply/Corsair 750 // $114.88 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...Q/mysuperpc-20 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=1wmmu641l1yad CPU // Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz // $219.95 (Do I also need a better cooler? is the one that comes with it enough?) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...4/mysuperpc-20 MOBO // MSI P67A-GD65(B3) LGA 1155 // $159.99 (This is what I found so far... any better recommendations?) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...4/mysuperpc-20 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...scrollFullInfo RAM // Some 50$ card Ill spec out later (2x4 gb) // $50 GPU // EVGA GeForce GTX 460 1GB DDR5/GTX Ti 560 // $169.99 (I like the 460 card, I was wondering how high end is it and how long is it going to last me/ also I found the 560 but it costs alot more) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...4/mysuperpc-20 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...D=rg4c7w1l27gv http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130661 Sound Cards // I decided to save a lil and not get a sound card // $0.00 (Is this a good idea???) Hard Drive // Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200rpm SATA 300 MB/s // $89.99 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...0/mysuperpc-20 Optical Drives // Sony 24x SATA DVD RW/CDRW // $18.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ID=862686&SID= Software // Win 7 Home // $99.99 TOTAL = $978.77 Now my biggest concern is the comparability amongst each component. What are the key things I need to be checking for before I buy the parts or if I decide to go with something else. Will I run into some after build issues (in the long run, like not having enough system cooling.... )? This is mainly a gaming rig for sc2, Diablo 3 and Battlefield 3 ty, Blicky Last edited by Blicky; 09-16-2011 at 06:30 PM. Reason: Please edit my tiltle to say 1st buil, ty :D |

Yes it is - but it's worth it if you are building a computer for gaming. The graphics card is more important than the CPU in a gamer. However, in that price range a Radeon 6950 is a better gaming card - but I get the impression you want a Nvidia card for some reason.
Next step down is a 560 or a 6870. |

As an aside, you are best off buying all your parts from the same vendor, this will make it easy if you DO have problems and have to return items. I know it seems like we push Newegg here, it's because their prices are generally pretty good and their customer service is excellent. Sometimes using a search service such as Pricegrabber will lead you to vendors that don't have such good service. Amazon.com is very good as long as the parts are coming from Amazon and not an affiliate vendor. I do have a few alternates to Newegg I do use if necessary.

EVGA and Asus are my 2 choices for Nvidia cards - and the -AR series EVGA's have a lifetime warranty if you register them. The -KR is 3 years.

No, please get the Asus board, not an Asrock. It's going to be more reliable.
$10 more gets you a 1.5 tb drive instead of 1 tb. |

The Z68 has the Intel Smart response technology which affords SSD caching. If you added a smaller 40 to 64 gb SSD (sata III), it would increase the performance of of your sata spin hard drive. There is also advanced overclocking features with the chip-set when using the integrated graphics but you are not. If you are looking for the 4 SATA 3.0Gb/s and the 4 SATA 6.0Gb/s then I would go with this board. If that is not your goal advise us and I can give you a less expensive Asus alternative. Is there some feature(s) that are important for you like sli or the number and type of SATA ports?
Newegg.com - ASUS P8Z68-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS Stay away from Samsung hard drives and stick with the Western Digital Cavair Black. The Samsung you chose is also SATA 3.0Gb/s, you want a SATA 6.0Gb/s which will provide you with 64MB Cache. The Western Digital also has a 5 year warranty. Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive |

I would not keep the Asrock board. glc, jdeb and khalil know what they speak of.
Asus is at the top. Asrock is towards the bottom. It's a no-brainer choice ![]() Motherboard Brand Rating

If you insist on avoiding the Asus P8Z68-V, the Gigabyte board is acceptable. However, the Asus is in fact both SLI and Crossfire compatible and is currently priced very well. You don't need the Pro version.
Get a SATA 6.0 WD Black, *NOT* a Samsung drive. Get the Vengeance LOW PROFILE memory I linked, you will need it if you ever decide to overclock heavily and get an aftermarket CPU cooler. The heatsinks on the regular memory may not clear the heatsink. Admin note - please don't edit a post after you have received responses. It gets very confusing. Thank you. |

That drive is fine - and as a matter of fact, if you would be happy with 750gb, this one is on sale for 59 bucks:

We don't recommend G.skill ram, they have been having quality and compatibility issues. You also do not need 1866 speed.
