How important is the motherboard in a gaming PC?

This is something I was curious about. I was originally going to get a $100 board but a friend told me to spend $150 so I picked out this board. Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

I just found this one on Newegg and was wondering if it was really worth it. Newegg.com - ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z LGA 1155 Intel Z68 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard

How much of a difference does the motherboard make?

It depends on what you are looking for in features. The higher price boards have a lot more features like wider PCI Express bandwidth for multiple video cards, ROG, dual lan, thermal enhancements, advanced BIOS for overclocking and fine tuning, etc.

Well for just 1 Nvidia card (MAYBE 2 in the future, unsure) and no overclocking is it necessary?

Which board were you initially planning to get?

If you want to be able to run 2 cards, this is the cheapest board I'd recommend:

Newegg.com - ASUS P8Z68-V LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Well if that is all the features your concerned with than the board glc linked is a great choice. It is a high quality board at a nice price point.

Check your thread. If you aren't going to Crossfire or SLI 2 cards, all you need is the LE.

The boards all accept 1600 MHz ram, and it runs at 1333 unless you enable XMP in the bios.
