Gaming and Game Design Rig

I'm wanting to work on some game design, mostly independent, not professional-type work. I'll likely start with side-scrolling game types and work out from there. From what I've read, I may start with the XNA architecture and try to learn C#

I'm also wanting to run the newest games, Battlefield, Skyrim, etc. preferably maxed out or close to.

I'd like to keep the budget around $2200 but that must include peripherals: monitors (2), mouse, keypad, speakers and OEM software.

Obviously, I want something that can be upgraded in the future and I'd prefer some redundancy with saved files.

All help is appreciated

With 2 monitors, peripherals, and OS, that will be over budget.

I get $1440 shipped after rebates - that should be in budget but I'm just wondering why you cut back on what you did - I'd personally cut back on the case and the external housing. You could save quite a bit with a Coolermaster HAF case and a Rosewill housing. I'd also cut the mobo back to a P8Z68-V.

No 1809.00 You may have missed something.

I left the Pro because of future upgrades, I prefer the pro for the additional SATA 6Gb/s ports, stability of the Bluetooth V3.0+EDR over the 2.1

I cut the CPU because we all know the I7 is a luxury in most scenarios.

Case is based upon taste I suppose but HAF, in my opinion, is not (arguably) on the same quality vs. price comparison.

I have used the linked enclosures as of late because of the USB3.0 and they are cool, and very quiet. In terms of reliability with the Rosewill, I do not have the data as of yet but they seem to be better constructed but not necessarily designed. From a design standpoint, Rosewill appears to have the edge but slight or not enough to get over with.

The GPU is changed to lower cost. I build gaming machines and I still to this day do not understand why so many will spend an additional 100+ to get a marginal performance improvement but I am not a gamer, I just give them what they want.

I have no problem with any case. I prefer Lian Li or the one you suggested is fine as well.

I don't either, as long as it's not a cheap piece of crap - but that's the first place I'd look to keep the price down, $190 is a lot of money to spend on a case. I really like Lian-Li too, and they do make good cases that are $100 cheaper.

Does the original poster have any feedback so far?

I do have feedback, thanks!!

It's hard for me to tell you how I feel because I'm still mostly new at this. Is the caching drive absolutely necessary? It seems like common practice here but I have no experience with setting it up. Also, with the failure rate still high on SSDs, will there be any information lost if the SSD dies on me? I'll take everyone's word on this being the most bang for my buck regarding my needs. As long as the group who has contributed gives me the thumbs up, I'll take it and make the purchase over this next week.

Thanks for the help. Anything else I should look at/think about?

Also, if I decide to go for the cheaper $59 dollar case. Where would you put the extra $100?

Caching with the SSD is a feature on the Z68 Sandy Bridge boards that allows you to boost the performance of your mechanical drive by using the 60 GB SSD as a cache. Effectively its supposed to boost the read speed on your mechanical drive.

The extra $100 could be used to get a GTX 580 instead of the 570.

Newegg.com - EVGA 015-P3-1580-AR GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi) 1536MB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

You could also get an after market cooler if you're planning on overclocking.

Before you think about upgrading back to the 580 (I don't think it's worth it), get your peripherals priced out. If graphic accuracy is important, I'd get a pair of these, it uses an IPS panel:

Newegg.com - ASUS PA Series PA238Q Black 23" 6ms HDMI Height,Swivel,Pivot & Tilt adjustment LED Backlight Widescreen LCD Monitor 250 cd/m2 ASCR 50000000:1

That comes to $1942.84 before taxes and shipping. I'm not sure what sales tax is on average in the US. The GPU can be downgraded to a GTX 570 and the PSU can be lowered to a TX650. I wasn't sure what you would be looking for in a mouse/keyboard/speakers so I added some fairly inexpensive peripherals. You could get two of the monitors that glc recommended with those cut-backs I believe.

You forgot the case for the backup drive.

Newegg sales tax is only applicable in CA, TN, and NJ.

Is this still the recommended configuration? I have to add one more thing this will be used for, photography. I just signed up for a night programming course and a couple of graphic design courses/photography courses.

I'm ready to pull the trigger with my next paycheck and I want to be sure this is still the recommended set-up.

Thanks everyone

Yes, but the price of hard drives has just about doubled since the list was put together.
