The problem is that XP doesn't contain SATA drivers for your hard drive. The solution is to not install XP first but go ahead and install Win 7. Here are instructions for doing a clean-install-windows-7-with-upgrade-media.

You *SHOULD* have bought Windows 7 OEM instead of the upgrade.

Why do you say that George? The OP is entitled to an upgrade from XP to Win 7 (provided he has a valid, licensed copy of XP) so it's perfectly fine for him to install using the upgrade media. The full package may be easier to install but it also generally costs more $$$.

OEM HP 64 is actually $10 *LESS* than the upgrade at Newegg right now. Are you possibly confusing it with the "Anytime" upgrade? That only works to upgrade Win 7 to a higher version of Win 7.

I didn't research any real time prices, that's why I said it generally costs less.

I've never seen a retail upgrade cost less than a full OEM.

well, at least the good news is the hard drive is not bad or defective
and learned something from it.I was able to get the upgrade win 7 for $10 from academic institution (it's legal procedure btw) and i have a valid win XP from my old build. So i will save a few bucks (that's what I thought) anyway...i ordered win 7 from newegg today. Thanks to glc & strollin for helping out with my issue here, your help always appreciated. |

Strollin *DID* link you to the procedure for installing the upgrade on a blank drive.......
In your case, that is the most economical way to do it. |
