Replacement MOBO Recommendation
First off, here are my system specs:
MOBO - eVGA nForce 780i SLI FTW CPU - Intel Core2 Quad Q9300 RAM - CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 (TWIN2X4096-6400C5C) Power Supply - CoolerMaster Real Power Pro 650W (RS-650-ACAA-A1) GPU - eVGA GeForce 9500GT HDD - Seagate 500GB 16MB SATA HD (ST3500641AS-RK) Optical Drive - LG GH223LS30 DVD I've had nothing but problems with my build since the beginning. I replaced RAM, HD and after my MOBO failed - eVGA sent me a free replacement. My last ditch effort to revive this build until I update technology is to swap out the MOBO and graphics card if needed with a different chipset. I've read a lot of people who have had problems with the 780i and similar chipsets. Suggestions? |

Do you want to keep the same CPU or upgrade to a newer socket?

Same CPU. I'd like to have this be a functioning PC for now that I can still use when I upgrade technologies.

I think I may need a firewire port for my video camera. I have to check.

There aren't any decent DDR2 socket 775 boards around any more. Something like this will have to do:
Newegg.com - BIOSTAR T41 HD LGA 775 Intel G41 ATX Intel Motherboard Newegg.com - Intel BLKDG41CN LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards However, I would really recommend you replace both the motherboard and ram: Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-P45T-ES3G LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard Newegg.com - Kingston ValueRAM 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model KVR1333D3N9K2/4G No Firewire, but you can get a card cheap. Newegg.com - SYBA PCI to Firewire 1394a 2+1 ports controller card (VIA) Model SD-VIA-3F Last edited by glc; 10-18-2011 at 08:34 PM. |

Perhaps provantage.com has something appropriate still in stock? They tend to carry slightly older parts.

glc...I'm going to upgrade RAM and MOBO per your recommendation. I should have listened to you before. I'll probably do it anyways, but is there any reason to go for a clean install?
Oh, and will I need to replace the graphics card? |

New video card not required, that one will work fine.
Clean install not required, but you will probably have to do a repair install. |

OK, new MOBO and RAM installed. I really want to do a clean install of Windows, but I can't get the computer to boot from the win 7 dvd. I tried changing boot priority, changing all boot devices to cd and entering the boot menu with F12. The DVD works fine when windows is loaded and I can run the win7 disk. I don't think I can really do a clean install while booted into windows though..
It's strange, the BIOS event prompts (press any button to boot from cd)? Thoughts? |

The BIOS didn't recognize the wireless keyboard at the moment I needed to press any key to boot from dvd. It's strange because it did allow me to press del to enter BIOS and F12 to enter boot menu.
Anyway, wired, non USB keyboard did the trick. I'd be interested to see if it works now that all is reinstalled etc. Thanks. |
