I feel like building a New PC.
Hi all. Just saw that AMD is releasing an 8 Core AM3+ CPU. And I want to build a new PC. So I ordered a Gigabyte GA990FXA-UD3 and a Thermaltake 650 PS.
Next month I am getting a Midtower case. Possibly a Coolermaster Centurian 534+. Eventually I will get a SSD, BD combo drive and the rest of the parts. Basically I will be getting parts as I can afford. Probably going to take me a few months. At least it will give me something to do. I dont know why, But it makes me happy to build things. |

You really should order all at once. Technology increases at an astonishing rate. Some of your hardware may be obsolete or useless by the time you have all the components.

Try to get all of the parts ASAP, the longer it takes you the more value you're losing.

I will be placing the order for the CPU tomorrow. However the Ship Date is over a month away. Amazon shows up to 2 months.
The Ram and SSD can always be later. They're readily available. |

It's not wise buying parts piecemeal like that - another reason is by the time you put it together you may be past the 30 day return window if any of them are defective.
I would ESPECIALLY not buy a motherboard and let it sit around - and in this case, how do you know for sure that it's fully compatible with a CPU that's not even released yet? |

I just listened to the This Week in Computer Hardware podcast. They reviewed the Bulldozer. The Bulldozer is actually two modules with 4 cores each and not 8 true cores. Bulldozer is also a big disappointment coming in at around the processing speed of a lower end i-5 processor. In the bang for the buck comparison, it ranks lower than a 2600K.
Don't get one until after you have read a few reviews.

The windows 8 benchmarks show Bulldozer to be fairly decent, usually a fair bit of an improvement over windows 7 as windows 7 can't make proper use of the modules. That being said AMD will have to tweak their design a bit with their next update since even in windows 8 it is still behind core i7 2600k.

Tom's Hardware picked the 2500K over the Bulldozer.

Thanks Glc. I placed an order for the Elite 370 from Amazon. It should arrive on Nov 1. Once it arrives I'll dry fit the Mobo to make sure it fits.
The Mobo I am using will work with AM3 processors as well. |

Talk about Fast delivery. The case arrived yesterday. Looks nice in person. Also has a 140mm fan in back near the cpu location. I may have to move that to the front of the case.

People keep knocking AMD CPUs yet distributors can't keep them in stock, they are very hot sellers. Benchmarks don't seem to effect AMD fans. As I stated before, AMD sells everything they make and rarely have any stale inventory!

The fan does need to be in the back, blowing out.

The FX-8150 arrived yesterday. Just opened it today. Came with a copper/aluminum cooler. The silent pipe I belive its called. Along with a fan on top. I may change that to a liquid cooler. If I can find one that the radiator fits in the fan space.
Thanks all. Last edited by ESCAPEMAX; 11-03-2011 at 01:16 PM. Reason: Update |

I decided to order a Corsair H70 cooler. Has a $10 Rebate at TigerDirect. And Free Ship. I am going to mount the radiator to the 120mm fan that came with the case.
Now if Crucial can get the DDR 2000 ram off Back Order. |

It does, however there isn't much point in getting ram faster than DDR3-1600, the performance increase going up to DDR3-1866 is fairly small, and you'll be paying 50% increase for the small increase, DDR3-2000 is pretty much double the cost of DDR3-1600 and again is only a small performance increase. Personally I would buy 16GB of DDR3-1600 ram, right now it's dirt cheap and you'll probably never have to upgrade the ram for the rest of it's lifespan.

Now I know what a chore it is to install a Corsair H70 by myself. Never installed a liquid cpu cooler before. The directions werent much help.
I installed the supplied back plate. Then tried to fit the locking ring on. Didnt fit. There was gap that was causing the pump assembly to sit above the locking ring. Ended up reusing the stock backplate and the Intel labeled screws. Since I didnt have an extra hand I had to cheat. Installed two of the screws on one side. Pulled up the other side. Slid the pump inside and twisted it into position. Pushed on the Backing plate. While starting the 2 screws on the other end. Tightened them all. The Wiring diagram was wrong. Corsair Tech told me to plug the Pump plug into the Sys Fan port. The Radiator Fan intot he CPU fan port. Next time I am getting an extra set of hands to help. |

The H100 cooler comes with Intel ring already on it. Don't know about the 70. The radiator is also about a foot long but Corsair makes a case just for it.
