Need a stickie on explanation of PC parts descriptions
Not sure if the tiltle hits on what I'm talking about so let me explain. If this is on the site already forgive me as I couldn't find it.
So while looking for parts to build a new PC and only having built two pc's about 10 years ago the parts have obviously changed along with the available technology. What I would like to see in a stickie is the explanation of what the description [I]means[I]. For example, if I'm looking for a HDD on newegg and I see the following: HITACHI Deskstar H3IK30003272SW (0S03208) 3TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive What does that all mean? I understand some of the description should be obvious to even a novice builder such as the 3TB, 7200 RPM. But what is SATA? What does the 6.GB/s mean? Another example would be for a motherboard, again description taken from newegg: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ965FBGMBOX Again, what is L2 cache? L3 cache? what is quad-core? Dual core? What does the 125w mean? These are just a few examples. Another helpful tidbit would be if the stickie could explain not only what the descriptions mean but what their effect is on the PC. This would have to be done for every part for a pc. I think this would help tremedously those who are new to building or those who only build when they need a new PC. Hope I've explained myself well. Ron |

Any volunteers?
For now, a search engine should get you the answers you are looking for. The information is out there. |

Uh....not me.
There would be thousands of terms to define and then to keep updated which would mean a massive amount of man-hours to do this.A search engine is going to be your best resource if you are unfamiliar with a term. There are also online computer dictionaries and encylopedias that already do this. I do agree that it would take alot of time for the 'beta' sticky. After that it should just be a matter of keeping things updated, no?
I know everything can be googled but man after having been out of the game for 10 years its a pain in the but and takes days to research. Would be nice to have a sticky... Plleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease! Ron |

For hundreds or thousands of man-hours to create such a list? I don't think that is going to happen.
![]() I know that if you cannot find a good enough definition or you have a question then the people here are more than happy to help with your specific question. |

I don't really think it would be hundreds of thousands of man hours. Maybe I'll attempt the sticky to give everyone an idea of what I'm talking about. Remember we(meaning noobs) would just need the basics of what the description :LINGO means.
Most of the info could probably even be linked to pages already written...this would still be a time-consuming advantage over trying to google every little thing. Ron |

I said hundreds or thousands of man-hours.
Why don't you volunteer to do this for PCMech?

. I'm no writer by any means but I guess I'll give it a shot. Not sure how long it will take but I will try...Ron |
