Memory Help Needed Please
My Poweredge 2850 server has memory problems and will not boot. I'm hoping that it will be easy to replace the memory and I will be back in business.
Using Google, this is the Memory I need: 400 MHZ DDR2 SDRAM 144-BIT ECC registered interleaved PC2-2300 DIMMS I'm hoping I can just run to Fry's to pick this up? Can you tell me exactly what I need and give me any other advice you may have? Many Thanks! Jeri |

That's specialty memory and probably not available at Fry's. I would order ram direct from Crucial, it's guaranteed compatible.
Computer memory upgrades for Dell PowerEdge 2850 Server from Crucial.com Overnight shipping is $19.99, Saturday delivery is $29.00. |

We have been wanting to build a new server (but kept putting it off
), so I don't want to spend too much on this if possible...

Did you use Kingston's memory tool to find the right part for your server?

ECC memory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It actually corrects for errors caused by cosmic rays.

I strongly caution you to only buy ram that's in a configurator for that server, or buy ram from Dell. Servers are a lot fussier than generic desktop boards. |

Unplugging and re-plugging the power cord enabled us to boot. So, I ordered parts for a new server build based on previous responses here and will cross my fingers the current one holds until then!
I can’t thank all of you enough for your continuing help and support. I’ve built several work stations now, but this will be my first server. I’m thinking of going with SBS 2011 Essentials – if anyone has a comment on that! ![]() Thanks again. Jeri |

Well... That didn't last long. Damn! Should have ordered replacement memory on Monday...
glc - I have nothing but respect for you - please do not take offense to my questions - I'm a complete noob and I fully admit it. :-) On the DELL website, I believe it is telling me I need PC2-3200 Memory | Dell One of the options listed is a Kingston - the same part nbr listed on Kingston's Memory tool (Thanks NK!) - KTD-WS670/1G Kingston Technology Company - Kingston Memory Search - Search Results for: I have no idea what Single Rank vs the other choices mean, but I know I don't need much memory. Do I need to purchase 2 of these or will 1 suffice? BTW - my Poweredge is in a rack configuration - not a box. Does this make any difference to any of this? Here is the Newegg address - I'm not buying anything until I get the approval from here. :-) Newegg.com - Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR2 400 (PC2 3200) System Specific Memory Model KTD-WS670/1G Thank-you all! Pull an existing module and look at the sticker - exactly what is it?
Have you run any diagnostics? You may be having a different issue. |

When I boot the server, there is an option to boot into Utilities and there is a Memory Test Utility in there. I did run this and it failed. While booting, I get a memory error telling me that it has reduced system memory. And when the boot fails – after trying to start Windows, I get a blue screen with a memory parity error. These are the reasons I suspect memory.
BTW – I left it unplugged for an hour and was able to get it to boot again – obviously I’m running on borrowed time. I still get the Memory error telling me there was an issue and the amount of system memory was reduced – just not the blue screen this time! Do you still want me to open the box and pull the memory? I will if you think it best. It may not reboot – but we can live for a day without it. Or maybe re-seating the memory will help! One never knows... ![]() Thanks! Jeri |

Boot it with one module at a time - and run the test. You may have enough good sticks to run it as is for a while.

Results:
All 4 sticks failed the Mem test of the boot up utility – leaving me to wonder about that test. 3 of the sticks gave the error on booting that there was a read/write error and memory was being reduced. 1 stick – although failing the “Mem test” – gave no errors on booting and booted just fine. The slots are listed from left to right as: DIMM3_A DIMM3_B DIMM2_A DIMM2_B DIMM1_A DIMM1_B Not knowing how these things work, I replicated the test and results in both DIMM1_A and DIMM1_B What do you think? Should I run with the 1 256 stick or buy some new memory? If you think I should buy new memory – can I just buy 1 stick or do I need 2? Thanks glc!

It will run fine with 1 stick, it just won't run in dual channel.
What OS is on this server? I don't think it would run very well with only 256m ram. |

Update: I ordered 1 stick of replacement memory from NewEgg. I’m about 90 miles from NewEgg and usually get my orders the next day. This took 7 days!!! On the 7th day, I walked into the office to a blue screen.
Fortunately, the mail was delivered only an hour later and the new memory seems to be working just fine. Whew! We’ve also received the parts for the new server build, so that will take place this weekend. Thanks again for all the help! This forum gives me the courage to tackle jobs I never would have dreamed of otherwise.

If you ever need something right away, Newegg has a will-call available at their California warehouse now.
