My Best/Sweetest Build Ever

You know when you hold something or read something, or see a picture perhaps that just astounds you, and are left in awe?? Well, my last 2 builds in past few weeks are awesome; the one for myself a tad faster than my son's but he has more gas as for video card. Never the mind where I got the parts - they come from same manufacturer and all are absolutely excellent. The fastest PC I've ever owned. BTW, I had the same cpu in the Sabertooth and the rig crawled in comparison. Mobos do make the difference.

Asus Pro Z68
Intel I-7 2600k
Kingston Hyper X SSD
Corsair Vengeance Ram (16mb)
Corsair H100 water cooler - 22c at idle
Corsair Carbide 500r case (made for large water cooler radiator)
Corsair AX 750 power supply

I ain't even tried to o/c yet and the stuff is on the screen b4 I can blink anyway. A testament to quality parts for sure.

Most of the performance increase you are noticing is from the SSD, it really makes a big difference. All the programs and games become a lot snappier to respond and load, and windows loads way faster than with a regular drive.

The Kingston has almost double the performance over that Crucial.

I have built with both motherboards using identical hardware and have not noticed the performance increase your glaring about, if anything, the Sabertooth is a little faster when using workstation applications which is why I use them still. That has been my experience.

Really? I have both running on kitchen table side-by-side but using different monitors of course. Ram same speed. Just board and ssd different. No contest. I'll put all this in the Sabertooth and see what happens. I just know what I see for myself...

Sarge, it's great to see you having a good time messing around with computers. If it's a hobby that you have fun at then hell, why not spend the money? There are more expensive hobbies like yacht racing and flying airplanes.

My next project is getting another SSD and buying the Linux Bible with CD at Fry's that has all versions including Ubuntu, Fedora and host of others. Unplug this one, install version want, then learn how to play. Started to today but pre-black friday lines already too long. Maybe Monday.

It is a great book but it is a hard read. For your purposes other than you are a new user. I can not think of a better one for what it is worth, just try not to get frustrated with it. The frustration may come because it is not really geared for a new user (in my opinion). The good thing is you can try a bunch of different distributions and settle on one that feels comfortable with you. I would be willing to bet the openSuse or Mint distribution will feel the best to you. Remember, you also will have several GUI's to choose from with openSuse, KDE, Gnome, and XFCE. KDE is the most resource hungry but you have a rocket ship and will not matter. I think you will settle on openSuse KDE if I had to put money on it.

There are but he is getting it because there are 13 distro's that come with it. Other wise he would have to download all of them which would take a great deal of time. I think it is the book to get at this time until he settles on a distro. Once he settles on one, gets familiar with the book, then he could look at a more specific book tailored to his interests. In reality, the best Linux books are the man pages that come built in. There is nothing better on the planet than man pages.

I have all the Dummy books for Windows and other publishers and never used any. I just learn on the fly I guess. As long as I can use a mouse, I'm good to go. Keyboard commands would remind me too much of Dos, which I hated.

You can get all the info you need for free on the internet. It is also more current than reference books, especially when it comes to computers.

One magazine I read was talking about Steve Jobs as if he were still living, while Steve had already passed away a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the heads up on recommend. I would have probably chosen Ubuntu just because I see so many books about it on the shelf. Will try openSuse KDE first. Got the book (and cd) today and a Patriot Wildfire to put it on. Way overkill I know...
