Don't need a video card to build it and make it work.

Do this BEFORE installing ANYTHING into the case:

PROBLEMS with a NEW BUILD? Try This!!

I assume you have never done it before so my guess would be 3 hours including installing OS. Take your time and read or print out that stickey... post #1.

I am not trying to be a smartalec but you need to refer to your motherboard manual for the instructions. For example, if will have a blown up picture of your front panel connector which shows you how to connect the power swith, led hd, reset switch etc. Look at the little connectors and you will see an arrow pointing to the positive wire.

SSD for caching or for OS?

The manual clearly explains all this.

???

The cables just go into the headers on the mobo. SATA0 (or 1) for the first HDD, and so forth. Plug in the hard drives first, then the opticals.

sorted out the front pin connectors for LED and things now, had a few cables hanging out still 1 being a 5 hold USB and 1 a 4 pin molex for the case fan connectors none of which i have any idea where they go. i tried to boot the computers and it was on for like 10 seconds then powered itself down, please tell me i haven't completely ruined everything.

i'm using my SSD for OS also the HDD has a sata and a sata power connector in it and a free 8 pin socket should something be plugged into that and do i need a separate power cable for blu ray, ssd and hdd or can i connect 2 with 1 cable and the other separatly.

im way out of my league here!

Are you reading the manual that came with your motherboard? For a first build you absolutely have to do this. There are lots of things that can be done wrong and you do not want to do any damage.

Asus boards come with an adapter for connecting your HDD LED light, power switch, reset and speaker leads to. The adapter is labeled. You then attach the adapter to your motherboard. If something does not work then reverse the polarity.

You can power more than one device with a power cable. Or you can power each with their own cable. It depends on what will make your cable management look the best.

Yeah I have been reading the motherboard manual I used the adapter for the led and it's lablelled so I know that's right now I will be posting later as I have work now there's a few cables where I'm unsure about where they connect to as there doesn't seem to be a corresponding cable or connection on the mono. For example a molex that comes from the fan controller to power the case fans, there's also a 5 hole USB from the front panel. Lastly is there an order to connect the sata cables I have 4 altogether 1 from front panel, blu ray, hdd, and sdd

Your HDD and SSD go on the Intel SATA 6.0 connectors, the front panel and BD go on the standard Intel SATA 3.0 connectors. Start with the lowest numbered ports. The Molex from the fan controller connects to any Molex on the power supply, NOT the motherboard. The USB cable from the front panel goes on any motherboard USB header.

Thanks, but the usb headers on the board are 9 pin and the usb from front panel is only 5 holes does it just use the top 5 and leave the bottom 4. The molex from the case doesn't seem to fit in the one from the power supply unless its a really tight fit and I wasn't pushing hard enough.

In terms of the booting it up and going off after 10 seconds is that anything to worry about.

From looking at the motherboard user manual, everything should be clearly labeled. You have several connections for the fan controller then you have the USB which looks exactly as it should, the AC 97 connect and a 4 pin molex adapter for the case/fan leds. The molex may be a tight fit, or the pins inside the molex plug associated with the case are loose and moving around. If they are, it might take some jiggling to get them lined up to the PSU molex plug. Just follow the wires up the case. Whichever goes to the USB you connect to the bottom USB headers.

If your drive is brand new it needs to be prepared: partitioned and formatted.

Click Start, then type diskmgmt.msc. See if your 2TB is listed.

I have completed the above step and it says Disk 1 im not sure if this is refering to my SSD drive or if its just the 2TB HDD.

It also gives 2 options of : Master Boot Record and GUID partition Table

What exactly do you see on the screen?

What's the colour of the band for Disk1? Black? Does it say somewhere 'Unknown' or 'Unallocated'?

I apologise i have just found where it says like 1882gb unallocated Disk 0 is my SSD 119GB and my HDD is showing as unallocated.

it says you must initialize a disk before logical disk manager can access it then i can chose MBR or GPT then behind that is the screen that shows the allocated drives

Use MBR. Then just partition it as you see fit and then give the volume(s) a name and proceed to format the partition(s). After this, Windows will assign drive letters and you'll be able to use the drive.

I have no idea how you do any of the above. Any links to a walkthrough perhaps would be much appreciated

Uh? You haven't installed any drivers? Of course you need them.

Did your mobo come with a disc? The chipset and mobo drivers are therein.

Open Device Manager and see how many Unidentified items you've got (they're marked with a yellow flag).

Start > type devmgmt.msc to open Device Manager.

the only yellow flags i've got are ethernet controller sm bus controller 2 USB controllers and 1 Unknown device. but everything else is showing fine, i assume some drivers have been installed over wifi? would i still need to use the motherboard disc?

Definitely. You have some non-working items there!

Pop the disc in the drive and see what autoplay brings.

Im so pleased with this build i have installed for drivers from everything in device manager now (no yellow flags) is there anything else you recommend?

The system is running so quite and so cold! im sure the air coming out the back is colder than the air going in!

According to my Asus Suite II CPU is running at 16 Degrees Centigrade

Now that you've all drivers installed it's time to start slowing the machine down with Windows Updates! (j/k, kind of…)

But before you do anything else:

Go to System Properties (press the Windows key and the Pause key at the same time, or just Start > right click on 'Computer' > click on Properties. There click on Advanced in the left pane.

In the window that opens up, click on the Remote tab, then uncheck everything. Now click on System Protection and disable System Restore on all drives but the OS drive (your SSD).

Now click on the Advanced tab and then on the Settings… button in the Startup and Recovery section: there, uncheck 'Automatically Restart'.

Click OK.

Now you're ready to start installing updates.
