New Build for nxt mnth
Using my taxs to build this new system, will be ocing to maybe 4.6 or so. I was going to push this off for awhile but I'm getting a bonus at work plus taxs so I'm good. I'm up for suggestions, the reason for this build is for gaming, media server (serving 2 htpc's), photoshop editing.
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z Intel Core i7-2600K OCZ Vertex 3 VTX3-25SAT3-120G 2.5 COOLER MASTER COSMOS II RC-1200 Asus Bluray burner XSPC Rasa 750 RX360 I already have a raptor 160gb which I will use for my games and video/photo editing. I a a 1tb drive, 2 tb drive, and 2 500gb, I will be replacing them with all 2tb drives though. I will be eventually adding a Acer Aspire easyStore H340 server. Don't think I'm missing anything I plan on adding a sli with 2 gtx 570's in the future and then can add water blocks on them. What do yall think? I have all the other things I need 2 lcd monitors, merc stealth keyboard, xbox 360 wireless pc adapter. My budget is 2k or less, I'm a lil nervous about using water but the newer tech looks to be idiot proof so I'm willing to try Last edited by hyg71886; 01-12-2012 at 11:13 AM. |

Would go with a Corsair or Antec PSU, a bit better quality than the OCZ. And go with Corsair/Adata/Kingston for ram, Gskill has had problems with their ram.
Depending on how you will use the SSD, the OCZ may not be the one to use.

If the SSD is for the OS you're going to want an Intel 510 SSD. Probably the 120 GB one which is ~$300. You're paying a bit more, but Intel currently makes the most reliable SSD and if this is for your OS you don't want to take the chances of the whole thing dieing on you.

I'm under the assumption you want to put other software on your SSD other than the OS. I mean, its not really practical to spend all that money to shave time off booting windows when a SATA 3 HDD does it in less than 20 seconds.
Windows 7 itself takes up between 30-40 GB of space so you'd want at least a 60 GB SSD to give yourself breathing room. I recommended the 120 GB one because the 510 only comes in 120 and 250 GB sizes. You could get a 310 with less storage, but its considerable slower size its only a SATA 2 SSD while the 510 uses SATA 3. Since one of the main goals of the SSD is to reduce load times I assumed you'd want the extra speed. Also, Corsair vengeance memory would be the much better choice. If you want to go with SLI GTX 570's I would recommend a high quality 750 or 850 W PSU. Since you want to overclock and throw 16 GB of memory into it you should consider a Corsair TX850, AX850 or SeaSonic X 850 W or one of the Antec HCP 850 W PSUs. GSkill ram will have noise about it forever - such the nature of the beast from last year. My Asus Sabertooth hated it last year but then it hated everything anyway. I'm using it now on another Asus and they love each other. I'd go for the Corsair Vengeance though as a recommend. I use it also. As for SSD, these guys like Intel because that's what they keep seeing being posted along with their own experience. You know, Coke vs Pepsi, Ford vs Chevy, chocolate vs vanilla. I've used Crucial, Kingston and Patriot Wildfire and all kick butt. For a PSU, why not spring for a modular and do away with all the excess cords you have to wad up and stash? My current, favorite SSD:
Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX SH100S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-alone Drive) For PSU, Corsair has a bunch of modulars, this is a good one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139016

The reason for Intel is because their SSDs have the lowest failure rate. You could get a Corsair, Crucial, whatever SSD and never have a problem, but its less likely an Intel 510 will fail than a OCZ or Corsair.

That's alot of $$ for a case. If you think you ever want to try water cooling, this is the case I use. The top holds the Corsair H100 perfectly and can hide all your cables. Also comes in black.

I have the 120GB HyperX SSD Sarge linked to above, and its stupid fast. I use mine for OS and applications. As a matter of fact, its probably a better idea to run your apps and OS from the SSD, or else youre not going to see very much in the way for speed increases. Relegating your apps to a platter drive is still going to make em slower than it would if they were installed to the SSD. SSD for OS and installed apps, platter drive for storage

Ya I'm gonna get that ssd linked above, still trying to figure out this liquid cooling though for overclocking. The mobo can auto oc to 4.6 which is why i want the water cooling (that and I don't want 10 fans spinning like last time lol). Does anyone have any suggestions as far as the water cooling side of the house? And if anyone is wondering the reason I'm going SLI is cuz this is getting hooked up to a 61in dlp 1080p tv

1080p is 1080p, regardless of the panel size. I run a 560Ti myself, and have no issues with games or movies in 1080p. I built my system specifically for BF3, and it handles it with ease. SLI 560Ti cards are one of the fastest combos out there...cheaper and faster than a GTX 580. Honestly, as far as OCing goes, these days, it really isnt necessary. You arent going to see the huge performance jumps like what were common years ago overclocking. I used to be really big into OCing back in the Socket A/Socket 478 days...not so much now. You can read some of my old threads about OCing if you wish, I had plenty back in the day. Today, those threads are pretty irrelevant as CPU and motherboard architecture has changed quite a bit.

@ Tin did some reading on the vga card you have the 570 barly beats it and its way cheaper looks like we got a winner lol, but i also read the hd 6970 consistently bests it
MSI Twin Frozr II 2GD5/OC this is great though because now I can order 2 and not break the bank this new pc is gonna rock. @ Sarge I'm just not sold on that case, I was going to use the h100 at first till I saw the XSPC Rasa 750 RX360 which can have things added like vga cooler, ram cooler and chipset. But tin made a good point about overclocking I probably wont notice the speed increase but at the same time if 4.6 wont shorten the life of my pc with proper cooling im gonna do wat it do . What do you guys think about the Astro A40 headset and the Turtle Beach PX5's? My fiaance is always complaining she cant sleep so 250 bucks to play in the middle of the night is a worthy investment to me. Nope, sorry I never corrected that. My Golden Retriever has a big tail. I still have the side cover off so I can switch between the 2 drives versus doing the F8. I backtracked the events and when my bearded dragon behind us starts jumping around her cage making noise, he jumps and wags around to look. He'd nudged the SATA connector just enough to crap it out; too loose for my comfort. Takes a vice grip to yank the power connector though. You know I couldn't make that up.
Kingston still wkng as I am typing now. My bad follow-up.

I too am running the Hyper X and so far I am very happy with the performance. If it wasn't for Sarge posting on the forums about how good the Hyper X was, I probably would've still be going with the Pyro SE. For a case, I would also look at the Cooler Master Haf 932. Beast of a case and very rigid and not cheesy. I really liked the 500r, but thought the overall construction couldn't be compared to the HAF 932.

Thank you for Hyper X. Just keep the case closed or Golden Retriever's tail out of it.
