Using Windows XP with a New AMD Build
Hello
I am entertaining the idea of building a new AMD PC socket FM1 and was wondering if I can use Windows XP 32 bits until Windows 8 becomes available. This PC is just to listen to music on DC and DVD and watch a few movies and browse the internet. Any Issues with Windows XP on this new generation MB and APU. My Intel Quad on a DFI P35 Motherboard died and I just want to use as many of the existing components (HDD, Video Card etc) if possible with the new sockets and CPU. Thanks for any help |

The big thing is that XP drivers for today's parts aren't being developed by all makers of motherboards. So, your best bet is to get Win7 along with the new motherboard or get a motherboard that will take a Core2 Quad. There are a few 775 socket board out there but in uATX.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Maybe I will just bite the bullet and go with Windows 7 and then upgrade to Windows 8 SP2 |

I just checked - XP is supported on the Asus F1A75 board. This is just an example.

Thanks and Cool that I can still use XP
This what I am contemplating I also have Vista; this system is just to listen to Music (CD,DVD) and watching movies thru Netflix. 1 X Western Digital Caviar Blue WD1600AAJS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive 1 X GIGABYTE GA-A75-D3H FM1 AMD A75 (Hudson D3) SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard (Will check out the recommended ASUS), may consider the mATX version if I do NOT buy the discrete Video Card, but it is a $10 difference between the 2 boards. 1 X Linksys WMP600N PCI Wireless Adapter with Dual-Band (for Vista, but can eliminate if I instal with XP) 1 X Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio (70SB104000000) 7.1 Channels PCI Express x1 Interface Sound Card 1 X CORSAIR Vengeance 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Desktop Memory Model CMZ4GX3M2A1600C9 (using 32 bit XP or Vista) 1 X AMD A8-3870K Unlocked Llano 3.0GHz Socket FM1 100W Quad-Core Desktop APU with DirectX 11 Graphic AMD Radeon HD 6550D AD3870WNGXBOX (Eliminate the need for a discrete Video Card) 1 X COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO RR-212E-20PK-R2 Continuous Direct Contact 120mm Sleeve CPU Cooler Compatible with latest Intel 1366/1155 and AMD FM1/AM3+ I think all up about $510 + 13 Shipping Any need to change components in the list |

That particular Asus board was not a recommendation, just an example. I'd like to defer to jdeb for a specific Asus recommendation.
For wireless, what brand and model is your wireless router/access point? Is it not feasible to run an Ethernet cable? You shouldn't need a sound card - today's onboard sound is generally very good. If you are going to be using an aftermarket CPU cooler, you should get low profile ram. The heatsinks on the standard Vengeance can get in the way. What are you going to be using for a case, PSU, and optical drive? Are you sure a 160gb hard drive is big enough? I think I'd go with a SATA 6.0 drive with as much cache as you can handle within the budget - either WD or Hitachi. |

Thanks
I will wait and see what others have to say about the AMD MB. My original MB was a DFI P35 LP UT T2R, the Bios was corrupted when I installed Windows Net Framework 4 on Windows XP SP3 (I know I should not have done it) but anyway I tried to clear the bios but it just continually went into a loop, and then I turned off the power and tried to reboot, but no response at all. I got a new Bios chip to replace the old one to see if it works, but no luck). NO POST The router is a Netgear, which is upstairs and I am downstairs so logistically it makes sense to use wireless. The existing wireless adapter card is a Linksys (Windows XP compatible). I just want to use as many of the existing components as possible from old system. Thanks for the advice about the Sound Card, I will not Buy it. Thanks for the advice about the fins on the memory. I will look for memory without fins. I am going to use the existing case (Cooler Master (on wheels/castors), it has lots of room), PSU the existing OCZ (750 watts) I have a spare PC & C 750watts also. I have 2 other HDD, more storage than I really need. My primary concern is the New generation MB and will it support XP and the Components that I will pull off the old DFI MB and use on the AMD system. |

Use your existing wireless card if it works.
Get low profile Vengeance. |

This is kind of a "non-answer" to your question, but...
How about a Linux install? Could be fun to play with till Windows 8 arrives! Or it could be an option if the XP install doesn't work the way you want it.

Windows 8 is more written for devices with touchscreens. It's not that can't load it on a non-touchscreen device, you can.
Check out the boot time difference. This of course is a developers version of 8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL09_hfgK9c
