Upgrading cpu/mobo
Thinking about an i3 until ivy bridge comes out. So of course the motherboard needs to be future-proof at least for ivy bridge anyway. I've read that some motherboards are and some arent. I prefer Gigabyte mobos but i am open to suggestions. My budget is ~$500 and will be purchasing from newegg.
This is the cpu i was looking at. It matches/beats my current e8400(oc'd to 3.8) so it will do what i need it to until ivy bridge And yes the multiplier is locked i think on this cpu. Any idea if thiers any wiggle room to overclock?Newegg.com - Intel Core i3-2100 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I32100 This is the asus motherboard i was looking at. God those heatsinks are terrible though lol... Newegg.com - ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS And this is the gigabyte that i am leaning towards. Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3P LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard Was going to go with this ram. Assuming it is compatiable with the motherboard of choice. Newegg.com - CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 My current video card is a 6670 which should be fine. Since pretty much all mobos have crossfire nowadays anyway i can solve any of those issues with another 6670 ![]() My current power supply is getting kind of old (Antec basiq 500w purchased in 06). Hoping it will last until ivy bridge and at that point i could upgrade it and my cpu at the same time. Will probably purchase another video card and SSD at that time. Think i can get another 6-12 months out of it? Are some of stories you read online about a powersupply going and taking the computer with it true? |

The i3 is difficult to overclock because the multiplier is locked. The least expensive Sandybridge that overclocks easily is the i5-2500K.
If you plan on overclocking any Intel processor, an aftermarket heatsink is advised. With this in mind, you should get the low profile version of the Vengeance ram. The heatsinks on the standard Vengeance can have clearance issues. Th Antec Basiq is a decent PSU, it's made by FSP. They generally go quietly when they fail without blowing anything else up. I prefer Asus boards, but Gigabytes are decent. |

Think i am going to go with that gigabyte motherboard with that cpu and ram. I will be reusing the tower cooler i currently have on my e8400. After i buy the "adapter" to make it compatiable with 1155. Its kept my e8400 temps low and im assuming as cpus become more power efficient thier temps will probably be lower/easier to control.
Going off of what you said glc im assuming thier will be no wiggle room with the i3. Which is fine i plan on picking up a ivy bridge i5 xxxxk before the end of the year assuming the release happens semi on schedule. Thats when my overclocking fun will begin. I dont plan on overclocking ram but that might be on option if needed. So my selection as it stands currently Newegg.com - Intel Core i3-2100 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I32100 Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3P LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard Newegg.com - CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 I'm assuming when you were saying vengeance ram because it is lower profile you were pointing out the ram i had already selected. That is important to me because i plan to aim the tower cooler towards the top fan on my tower. This current leaves me ~$150 under budget. Maybe i could go ahead and pick up a newer psu The brands you guys recommend are Antec and corsair i believe. What would the recommendations be for a powersupply in the 600-700w range? Don't really care if modular or not. I've gotten pretty good at hiding unused cables

No, you want this ram, the heatsinks on the ram you selected can interfere with big CPU coolers:
