CPU Question

I am thinking of upgrading my computer I built three years ago. The components I need to upgrade for sure are my Mobo, CPU and RAM. My current system has a AMD Phenom 9550 X4 CPU, an EVGA nForce 730a GeForce 8200 Socket AM2+ MB, 8 MB of OCZ SLI 6400 RAM, a Sapphire 6950 GPU, an Antec EarthWatts EA750 750W PSU, running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition. I am thinking about getting a Intel Sandybridge CPU, but I have heard that Intel is going to release the Ivy Bridge soon. Would I do better to wait, or should I jest get a Sandybridge and be done with it? Thanks for your help!

This PC is going to be used for gaming mostly. I play games like BF3, Modern Warefare, Crysis, Borderlands, and the like. I have not yet decided on a buget, although I will likely be looking at around $600-800. I will be keeping my case, HDD, DVD RW, and Power supply. All I am looking to change out is the Mobo, CPU and RAM.

The higher end Sandy Bridges will run all of the games just fine. You really don't need the enthusiast grade Ivy Bridge to do this. With the higher end Sandy Bridges, your bottle neck for gaming will be your graphics card. You can get away with an i5 1155 for a gaming machine.

Great thing about sandy and ivy is that if you decide down the road you need more cpu power, you can replace the sandy cpu with an ivy and use the same board.

One final question, if I am planning this upgrade, wuold it be a good idea to upgrade the GPU as well, or is the one I have going to be able to run with this system? Thanks again!

For a gaming computer upgrading the graphics card has a far greater effect. You won't need to upgrade the CPU that GLC recommended.

The 6950 should do you well for quite a while longer.

What you could do later (when they become cheap and/or they show up on the used market) is get a 2nd 6950 and run Crossfire. Your PSU can handle it, as can the recommended motherboard.

Tax return just came in! Since my last post, I have had someone tell me about this processor: Newegg.com - AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8120FRGUBOX and this motherboard: Newegg.com - ASUS M5A99X EVO AM3+ AMD 990X SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

I am still leaning toward the Intel setup recommended, but are these comperable to the Intel Sandybridge? Thanks!

I ordered the CPU, RAM, and MOBO you recommended, glc, (I did double the ram ) and other than a hiccup with having to reinstall Windows, that is the smoothest build I have ever undertaken. This has become a very smooth, fast running machine. New build: Case - NZXT M59; MOBO - ASUS P8Z68-V Gen 3; CPU - Intel Core i5 2550; RAM - Corsair Vengance 16(4gx4); PSU - Antec EarthWatts EA750; HDD - OCZ Vertex 3 60G SSD, Hitachi 500 G Sata.

Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who gave me imput for this!

I bought the FX8150 Black Edition at 3.6GHz for not much more money.
Just a suggestion
Chas.

dont waste you money....those are very under-performing CPUs and perform LESS than the generation before them....a BIG waste of money
