Question Been out of the scene for a while

Hey all,
I've been out of the hardware scene for over a year now and am now needing to build a computer for my brother.
Everything's changed, I honestly have no idea what's what anymore. Completely new sockets and CPU's with graphics??

Brother's budget is £300 so around $500. It'll be used for video watching & World of Warcraft/light gaming.

Help me out, very much appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: My specs = Core i5-750 - 8GB DDR3 - ATI 5770

That's 300 quid for just the case and its contents - not including peripherals or an OS? Who is your preferred vendor?

Note - today's onboard graphics is a lot better than it used to be, but I don't think it can handle WoW very well. Your budget may be a bit light.

The integrated graphics on the new ivy bridge chips will run WOW just not on the high settings. My recommendation would be to use the integrated graphics until he can save up a little more cash and then buy a graphics card. Either that or save up more now and then go with either sandy bridge or ivy bridge.

There aren't any low end Ivy Bridge chips yet. The only low end 1155 chips are Sandy Bridge based and have the 2000 graphics, which won't cut it. Even the sub-$300 Ivy Bridge chips have the 2500 graphics.

Correct, its going to have to be a high end sandy bridge 2500k or 2600k or a high end ivy to even be playable. It needs HD 3000 or better or its not worth it.

There are a few lower end Sandys with 3000. The cheapest is the i3-2105.

Ok, some great advice there. Will put together a shopping basket tomorrow.
And sorry forgot to add; case, HD, DVD drive & OS i already have.
Is it not worth looking into old gen i5's that will be capable of WoW playing or are the newer CPU's miles ahead? Thanks

Just want to say thank you everyone. I got a rig very similar to this and it's working perfectly.
Cheers, Dale
