Build to include gaming

My last build was in 2004

Use:
Home Office - Word processing / Excel spreadsheets / e-mail / social media.
I would like to break into gaming (Battlefield / Call of Duty).
I would prefer a smaller case / footprint if possible, but don’t want to have cooling or space/fit problems.

Should I even consider reusing:
ViewSonic VG2230wm monitor (response time: 5ms)
Microsoft Windows XP Pro (version 2002)
Microsoft Wireless Laser Keyboard 5000 / Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 V1.0 / Wireless Desktop Receiver 3.1

Timeline: 3rd week of July
Location: California
Budget: $1,000 USD a bit more if I have to replace my monitor and/or OS

I viewed a recent game build where GLC recommended:

Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER HAF 912 RC-912-KKN1 Black SECC/ ABS Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card (11199-00-20G)

Would this be appropriate for my needs?
Thanks in advance for your help.

The hardware you have chosen looks good to me. As far as os is concerned,I would move to windows 7 and if your happy with your current monitor, keep it.

Perhaps, you might look at a seasonic power supply.

Good to go, get Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Nothing wrong with that Corsair PSU, it's made by Seasonic.

I'm ready to make the purchase for the build.
It's the same parts list as before.
Are there any last minute suggestions or updates in the last couple of weeks that would change your opinion of this list?
Thanks.

One small thing that could easily be dismissed: No SSD. That will make everything on your computer run faster. After having mine for a year, I can easily say that you will be glad you did it.

Doesn't have to be now, but when you get it you will be really excited. I would say if you have enought mechanical storage then skip the TB HDD and jump to an entry level SSD.

No complaints on everything else, looks like stuff I would buy myself.
