I would like to build a new, speedy general purpose PC that'd be used for surfing the web, editing photos, occasional light gaming (Starcraft II, XCOM) and spinning up a virtual lab environment as needed. I'd like to keep it under $1000 if possible. Given that, how do these components look?
Case: Corsair Carbide Series 500R Newegg.com - Corsair Carbide Series 500R White Steel structure with molded ABS plastic accent pieces ATX Mid Tower Computer Case (Yes, I know Newegg is sold out of these...I bought one last week while they were still on sale and it's sitting in my office now taunting me) PSU: Corsair TX Series CMPSU-750TX 750W Newegg.com - CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply (probably overkill for this, but I picked one up on the sale jdeb pointed out a little while back - thanks for that, btw!) Mobo: ASUS P8Z77-V LK Newegg.com - ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000 BX80637I53570K RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance LP 16GB (2 x 8GB) Newegg.com - CORSAIR Vengeance LP 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CML16GX3M2A1600C10B (VMs are memory-hungry little beasts, hence the 16GB) GPU: EVGA SSC 01G-P4-3652-KR GeForce GTX 650 Ti 1GB Newegg.com - EVGA SSC 01G-P4-3652-KR GeForce GTX 650 Ti 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card SSD: Intel 520 Series Cherryville 120GB Newegg.com - Intel 520 Series Cherryville SSDSC2CW120A3K5 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) HDD: WD Black 1TB SATA Newegg.com - Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive Optical: Plextor 16x DVD Burner PX-716SA Newegg.com - PLEXTOR 16X DVD±R DVD Burner 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 6X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 4X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Beige SATA Model PX-716SA/SW (link for laughs...salvaged from my old PC...mine actually has a black bezel so that it won't look goofy in this case...figured I barely use it as it is, no point in getting a new one) I figure I'll get the CPU/Mobo from the Dallas Micro Center and the rest of the components from Newegg. I think the GPU is the weakest part of this build, but then I don't game all that often and Starcraft II runs so-so off my current EVGA 256MB 8600GT card with just the occasional stutter? I'm all set for monitors (2x23" Acer monitors running at 1920x1080), 64-bit Windows 7 OS and peripherals. Your thoughts and input are most appreciated.

Build looks very good. A little overkill on the power supply but a great one. You could save yourself 30.00 and get this
Newegg.com - SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply The video card you selected is the best you can buy for a buck fifty. Take the money saved on the power supply and get a little better card Newegg.com - HIS H785F1G2M Radeon HD 7850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card |

Psst, jdeb, Sinister said he already picked up that TX750 psu, and grabbed it while he could when you made that post about the promo going on.
![]() Other than that, I agree as well, getting a stronger card will help.

Yep, I already bought the power supply. I know, I broke the cardinal rule for buying all your stuff at once but it seemed like too good a deal to pass up.
But I have been eyeing 7850's as it looks like you get a lot more card for just $15 more (per Tom's Hardware). And with the MIR on the PSU...hmmm...I think I might have to change to that HIS card... Thanks! |
