Trying to help a friend get a PC for his family

This build is for a work buddy that has a daughter that really needs a new system to do her school work and also for basic family use such as e-mail, web surfing and streaming videos. The only games his kid plays are those simple flash games from Disney.

He said his budget is about $400-450 but I want to throw in $100 myself just so he can get something a bit better. Currently he does have a monitor but it's only a 1600x900 and if it is possible I want to at least get him a 1080p monitor. Is it better that I just goto Dell and get something from there or is it better to build one from scratch? The reason why I'm throwing in the extra $100 is because I have a NewEgg gift card that I haven't used yet and also he's a good guy but like many of us in my industry it's just been tough lately. If the Dell route is better I'm probably going to just order it for him and knock the 100 dollars off when I deliver it to him.

His computer knowledge is very limited and obviously there are no preferences when it comes to the hardware, just cheap as possible I suppose with some confidence that it will last for at least 5 years.

What do you guys think? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and his current system that he uses is a 8 year old HP celeron system on it's last legs. He's currently running XP with 512MB of RAM

I would do a custom build. With these components, it should last you for years. Note, the power supply is OEM so you will have to buy a power cord or use the one off the old PC.

Thanks a lot Jdeb. I've been busy lately so I haven't posted a reply sooner. I will be talking to my buddy tomorrow and this one will definitely be the one I suggest to him. I put together about 3 systems on NewEgg and never could get it under $650.

Right. Not with Intel you won't. Hope none of the prices go up by time you make decision.
