johns new computer

Pam 123, I will be forever indebted to you for picking out the pieces of my new computer. It may take years before I can do something like that. Once I had all the parts it was not that difficult to put everything together, and yes I read the manual. Should have stopped when it stopped showing pictures and started talking about bios. Want to thank every one on this forum for your help. If I can help anyone, please let me know. Just remember the brain behind this computer is Pam123.

When I removed my new monitor from the shipping box, I found a note stuck to the front of the box that said "overaged". Anyone have an idea what that mean.?

To old to be useful? It may be an open box item.

Does the monitor work properly?

Probably means that it's been sitting in the warehouse for a long time.

"overaged"

The monitor works fine. Just wondered why someone would put a postee on the box with the word "overaged" hand written on it. Had to be there when monitor was boxed for shipping, couldn't be missed. On front of box in the middle, whoever boxed it had to see it or place it there.

I would think "overage" as in "excess" rather than "over-aged"...

overaged

Was just one word "overaged'. Sent question to Amazon.com, haven't heard from them. Think I agree with ware house. Product was made in 2010 and if it was still on the shelf, I can see someone labeling the oldest ones to get them sent out before newer ones.

Amazon

Seems like I stirred up a hornets nest when I suggested that "overaged" was used to identify products that had been stored on the shelf for a long time and these were to be sent out first. According to Amazon overaged means that it would cost more to send then Amazon had allocated. But not to worry, I wouldn't be charged any more for the shipping. Think I will expand my wish list there. lol

Amazon is wicked awesome. I paid a hefty overnight shipping fee on a large order once and when one single item in that order didn't make it out of the warehouse for next day delivery, they refunded the shipping charges for the entire order - without even being asked. They just sent me an email notification with an enclosed apology. The refund was processed within 24 hours, too. Amazing customer service.

I just wish that Amazon's site was as easy to use as Newegg's for searching for and researching computer components.

Help

Left town for a couple of days and came back to a dead computer. My nephew(Ididnt touch your computer) somehow killed it. NO power. Have disconnected everything. Removed power cord, plugged back in, turned i/o off and on. Nada. Is there a way to check to see if he fried the motherboard or shorted out the power system? Thanks

You can test the PSU for basic function by unplugging the power cable, disconnect the main 24 pin and the 4/8 pin CPU connectors from the motherboard, and using a paper clip to jump the green wire to one of the black wires in the 24 pin. When you plug it back in and turn on the power switch on the back, the PSU fan should start.

I gotta try that but on an unused PSU around here. I hate surprises. Would a double-insulated pair of needle nose do same thing but leave cord plugged into power while jumping?

You can leave the cord plugged in, but turn the switch off on the back, jump, then turn power back on. Don't jump with the switch on.

OK. I well remember what happened when PC running and I tried to test the voltage across a fan connector on mobo. It may have only been 7 volts or 12, I never found out. Whatever, it sure did bang and flash.

All your hardware is still under warranty so you won't have to re-purchase any thing but it takes up time.
Fortunately both Newegg and Amazon will have records of your purchases, not to mention the email invoices they sent, which take a lot of the hassle out of getting replacements.
Just follow their instructions in Customer Service and don't mention your nephew.

I don't know

Took the computer and layed it on its side, still cussing, took the side panel off and politely asked the machine what was wrong. Noticed that some of the unused power cables had come undone, thought I had bundled everything nice and tight, was wrong, rebundled the cables, plugged the thing in, and damn, it worked. And working now. Thanks for all the support, y'all the greatest.

See if you can download a service manual from Sony, then look on Ebay for replacement screens.

Sony Vio's are not the easiest for a novice. Unfortunately their service manuals leave a lot to be desired but it is worth a look. You can also look around you tube for some video's to help. You typically can pick up a screen for 80.00. Post the model number, maybe I can direct you to some links if you feel it will help. If you do decide to move forward, carefully inspect the power jack as this would be a good time to replace it. They break or crack pretty easy. They are $5.00.

novice is right

Once took apart girl friends laptop to fix it. SWMBO said "DONT EVER touch my stuff again". Left over parts did not do well.

Laptop that I was using has a problem. It won't start in normal startup. What I get is a screen that gives me options. Startup Repair that will run for an hour or so and end up saying can't fix. System Restore, password is not recognized. Comand Promt which I can get into. Ran chkdsk c: /f and it says everything fixed. Bought a Widows boot disc and it gets as far as can't load file missing. And of course number of file is in destroyed part of screen. For some reason, all this info won't display on monitor. Have located a screen replacement, but will have to wait until money becomes available. Question> what can I do in comand promt that will let me check out more of the system?

It will run for days, then decide to shut down. Have to wait hours, days before it will start up again. And this is after turning io to off and removing power cord. When open, and running the red LED EPU is on and the green LED EPU is on. When it won't start only the EPU LED is on. If it was anything else, I would say something is over heating. This, I don't know. After pushing the start button the red led and fans come on for a few seconds. Any suggestions?
