I have a maiboard of unknown origin that has a dead battery. The battery is something I haven't seen - it was soldered on top of a 24 pin chip with a cover over it that says "Houston Technologies HT12888A REAL TIME 9639A1 16969V". Two of the pins were bent up and the battery was soldered on to them. I found a similar looking battery from Radio Shack, but it's missing a couple of pins that the old one has. It's a "Dallas DS1287 REAL TIME..." I put it in and I no longer get the 'dead cmos battery' line, but it will not save the cmos. It has to be reloaded every time. Does anybody know anything about this kind of battery ?
There are a pair of pins by the battery, but it's just a pair - not like the usual external battery pins, so I don't know if i should try plugging into them or not. I wish I could ID this motherboard...I got the following info off of the wim's bios site: 03/03/97-i430VX-10031996C-00: Eurone model EM-5100V,EM-5200V, EM-5300V, EM-5400V, EM-5500V, EM-5600V, EM-5700V... all the same BIOS.....or Chicony motherboard or PCChips M530 or Concord COA-530 or Alton Model: MBPTRVX256MB,P5,Triton VX,256K PCB,EID or Houston Technologies Part No.MB-M535PC-256K or Elpina or Pine PT-7502 (rev. 5.0)

Don't get mad at me - but its time to find a new motherboard. Houston Technologies - PC Chips - it was a bad board when it was new.

LOL, yeah I know it's a clunker, but it's a repair job for someone else.
