Never mind the paintjob, check out the pic's of my modded fan

As I mentioned in the other thread about the paintwork, I came up with the idea of having LED fan's that are colour selectable. I hav'nt seen this done before.

So now I've made one, check out the link below:

http://members.aol.com/designerPC2/fanmod/fanmod.htm

There's some photo's on there and a short AVI. It was originally just a 120mm blue LED fan. So I ripped off the original LED's drilled a few more mounting holes and superglued in some Tri-colour LED's and new hyperbright blue ones. I wired up a rotary switch that selects the colours from off, red, green, orange, blue, and sort of purple. So what do you think of that guys. Cool Mod?

Anyway, i'm gonna do this to all the case fans so they change from the one switch as well as cold cathodes.

I'm impressed! Couple that effect with your paint scheme and you've created a unique look. My compliments on your creativity. Got plans for a side widow to show off some of the colors?

Thanks PR,

Definately going with a side window and a top window provided I can cut it OK. Still priming bit's up at the minute, so we'll see how that goes.

Try this link for the AVI

http://members.aol.com/designerpc3/designerfan.htm

I'm not sure if i uploaded it properly, bit new to using FTP but it plays OK when I click this link. If it still wont open, let me know and i'll have another go. It opens on the page rather than in media player, so the page will probably take a while to load (mainly because that's the only way I could get it to work)

Anyway, the clicking sound in the background is the rotary switch, and I've got to sort out one of the blue LED's (you'll see it in the AVI).

nice looking mod designer! That's alot of wires for a fan Way cooler than the tri-colors you can buy that have all colors lit at once all the time!

Wasn't an insult, anything that looks pretty in a computer and you do it yourself usually has alot of wires coming off it! My CDROM I modded a while back (with your help if I remember) looked the same way!

That's OK Redfallon, I did'nt take it as an insult, I know where your coming from. Still got to get some work done on it yet, like the LED legs arn't insulated. I've got to desolder the wiring and put some heatshrink over the legs (maybe at work tonight).

BTW how did the LED's turn out in the CD-ROM? I've just been outside spray painting one (and my fingers).

Thinking about getting CC tubes to match the LED's in the fan and connecting them to the same switch and doing all the other fans (including the PSU) so the whole colour scheme changes with that switch. Also I had an afterthought and wired the fan motor separately so speed control wont affect the LED brightness.

Well, now i've got some extra work to do, in the process of tidying up/shortening the wiring i put too much superglue gel on one of the LED's and completely melted it's casing (into the body of the fan), so now i've gotta drill it out, think i might try to add come more colours for good measure this will mean having to get a rotary switch with more pole's and positions so I can get more combinations.

Also, found these on RSWWW, thought these might be different

http://rswww.com/cgi-bin/bv/browse/M...toid=-93035131

It's an RGB led (incorporates red/green/blue) this means I could connect three potentiometers:

http://rswww.com/cgi-bin/bv/browse/M...toid=-94347871

and be able to adjust the levels of red/green/blue, this means it could produce virtually any colour. This could be an interesting mod. Think I'll buy some of those and try them

Very nice work on those fans as well. I just saw your paint job thread and this one was mentioned as well. Your PC will have a very nice look indeed.

I'm really impressed, that's awesome. Respect.
Have you considered, once you get it down pat, selling your design/idea/whatever to a company to take advantage of. You could make a bit of cash out of your creativity

Thanks again guys, I think it's got a bit more work to go yet. Still gonna try another one with the variable RGB LED's, when I costed that up it works out at £33 approx to do that.

The mod's working again now, maplin electronics finally got the LED's I needed in stock. I've now wired the LED's in parralel and recalculated the resistors required so i've reduced it from 12 resistors down to 3. Also found a PLC-see attachment in my workshop, so i'm programming it up (ladder logic) to give manual control from the rotary switch or auto control (sequencing) of the colour scheme. Once i've got the ladder logic sorted I can convert it to relay logic and use small solid state relays & NE555 timer chips to make an electronic version of the sequencer.

Now I'm sure this hasn't been done before

That sounds like it's going to be so awesome... where'd you find the plc?? And what time span you going to default the sequence to??

I had it left over from an automation project I was helping someone out with, I used to use it for roadtesting programs. It's a Siemens Step7 214. Was thinking of doing a couple of timespans like 10 seconds (fast changing) and 1-2 minutes for a slow change. I can't go too complex though as i'm gonna have to reproduce the ladder logic using SSR's and 555 timer IC's.
