The Day Hath Finally Come
Thanks for all your help guys and sorry about all the double posts... The day has finally come. Through my combined research and all of the advice from you guys I have decided on my build. I will be purchasing some of the parts at Fry's and order the rest off of Newegg tonight. This shall be my first build and spankin' beautiful system:
- AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Processor) - ASUS K8V-SE Deluxe (Motherboard) - 128 Mb ATI RADEON 9800 Pro (Video Card) - 120 Gb Seagate 7200 rpm Ultra ATA 8 Mb Cache (Hard Drive) - 1 Gb (2 X 512) PC3200 Corsair ValueSelect (Memory) - Aspire X-Dreamer II Black (Case) - Enlight 420 W (Power Supply) - ASUS Black 52x CD-ROM Drive (CD-ROM Drive) - Sony Black 3.5 inch Floppy Drive (Floppy Drive) - 3x Aspire 80mm UV Blue Fan w/ 4 blue LED (Case Fans) Once again thanks for all the help in piecing this together. I'm sure I'll be posting questions during the actual construction in a week. And I'll be sure to post some benchmarks once it's completed.

Nice setup. You did the right thing, you fully researched everything before you went buying, and even asked people what they thought. I really can't fault that machine, everything looks great

Very nice, but a couple minor observations:
1. You will probably wish you spent a few more bucks for a CD burner. 2. If you plan on trying to overclock it, that's not the ideal ram. If this is your first build, be sure to try a basic powerup out of the case first - there's a thread in our tips and tricks forum, entitled problems with build - might want to review that. There's nothing more frustrating than putting *everything* together, hitting the power button, and nothing happens. Build in stages, testing each time. |

Looks like it's going to be a quick system. You got that Seagate HDD at Fry's right? I saw the Friday sale, hehe.
Good Luck man! |

I'm low on cash and don't need the burner right now. Isn't it fairly simple just to install one later?

Yes, physically, it's the same as installing a regular CD-ROM. If that drive is more that $25, you might as well go for a burner. They're been getting fairly inexpensive.

For reference, you should be able to buy a quality burner for around 30 bucks. If you are going to buy just a CD drive for now and add a burner later, another possibility is a DVD drive now just in case you need to read a DVD, those are also around 30 bucks.
Combo CD/DVD/CDRW drives are under $50 now. |
