L2 Cache Question
I'm new, so first of all, what is it and what does it do? Second of all, is it worth spending more for a processor with 1024Kb of it instead of 512Kb?

If you are trying to decide between a Northwood and Prescott P4, the extra cache in the Prescott is counterbalanced by the shorter pipelines in the Northwood, so it's a wash. The Prescott runs a lot hotter than the Northwood, and the only real advantage to the Prescott at this time is its higher overclocking ability. If you don't plan on overclocking, stick with the Northwood. |

Ok, thanks. I'll go with the Northwood then. I don't really plan on overclocking. Is that pipeline thing you're talking about the micron number? If so, is it the smaller the better? The Northwood says .13 and the Prescott says .09.

Pipeline:
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/p/pipelining.html Micron: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/N/nanotechnology.html That kind of explains microns...it is a metric measurement of the size of circuits...Maybe someone else could better explain it.... |
