Yes, you should see better performance.

As to your poll question:

In this box, AMD. But I've had Intel systems in the past, and wouldn't be surprised if I had one again in the future.

My daughter's 2500+ Athlon XP performs and benchmarks in the same range as my P4 2.4b system. Her's is not quite up to my P4 2.4c system with HT and Dual Channel. You should see a dramatic, noticeable performance increase over a Celeron.

That poor Celeron doesn't stand a chance. Maybe it's time I replaced my 1.8 Celeron with a 2.8C P4 .

Oh boy - I thought you knew this. Both AMD and Intel can play games fine! One performs more than the other when you pay more, you get more! (sorry for the admonishment - couldn't resist ).

Heh, cyrix isnt to terribly awful. Ive build a few Epia box's and they run extremely well as far as basic computing and uses Veeeerrrryyy little power.

The Cyrix/VIA chips are the choice among modders right now, because they come with such tiny motherboards.

I agree. Why not go with a better brand? A nice Asus or Abit wouldn't cost much more.

He doesn't like Asus, HiHo - because his local shops don't carry them. Probably can't make enough money selling them.

Oh yes, I remember. Anyway, didn't he say that they have Gygabyte boards? I'd say that would be a better bet.

greedo This is all so new

OK, whats the difference between these makes of processor. Im new to the hardware zone, so no nothing about the ups/downs of these companies' products, so if someone could fill me in I would appreciate it.

Welcome to PC Mech forums

As for the differences, PC Mech has a rich history in threads about this. I'd recommend vieweing the AMD AthlonXP vs. Intel P4 chart difference that might help with your decision. Both of them are good - no disadvantage going one over the other.

Hope that helps,
kram

Thanks

OK, that chart doesn't mean a lot to me - as i said, very new to this. Should I understand it?

Would one be better than the other for a specific use? I'm thinking a machine dedicate to game play .

That was almost exactly my point - the chart makes little sense to most people, so there is no "technical" advantage of one over the other. On another note, you might benefit from starting a new thread on this topic - there may be more help offered that way.

As for gaming, both Intel and AMD are good - gaming depends on the GPU, not the CPU - as long as the CPU is "sufficient", it's good for gaming.
