adding usb 2.0 pci card

Installed usb 2.0 pci card to support external dvd
burner. usb 2.0 card and dvd burner appear to be working fine, but I'm
not sure what I may need to do to ensure that two previously installed
printers work okay using the usb 2.0 card. The original usb 1.x ports
are still working fine, but I would prefer to use the new usb 2.0,
especially with the one photo printer. After installing the usb 2.0
card, I was prompted by Windows XP Home to install the printers. The installation process
started, but then, I got a blue screen error message which shut down XP. So the question is how to properly install the printers
connected to the usb 2.0 card, which were previously installed through
the original usb 1.x ports. Do I need to uninstall the printers while
connected to the 1.x ports and then reinstall when connected to the 2.0
card?

I would disconnect then uninstall the printers.

Restart the PC then after it is completley restarted plug the printer in and let windows do its thing.

I would think that you would remove the printer drivers/software etc with the printer unplugged, since this will probably be set up for the old plugs. Then I would install them and follow the instructions the installation gives and put them in the 2.0 plugs. What blue screen did you get? I don't think they should be plugged in when you do this, they might cause problems. What printers are you trying to install? Do they have sepparate usb 1.x and 2.0 drivers? I have never had to do this and so am only guessing, maybe someone else has and can give you a few pointers.

Goodone fudtone - beat me to it.

I thought 2k had flakier USB support than XP? Maybe I'm incorrect, although I still would go with XP over the 2k IMHO.

I like 2k... as far as the USB goes I have no idea if either is better. I have heard XP is better.

If you have XPSP1, all you USB ports should be 2.0, even the original ports. Sometimes it doesn't say either USB 2.0 or Enhanced. The USB 2.0 driver number is: 5.1.2600.0 If the port has that driver number, it's USB 2.0

I thought XPSP1 provided only the software/driver support for usb 2.0. You also need a usb 2.0 card. In my case, the existing usb 1.x ports remain as 1.x and I now have separate 2.0 ports via the added usb 2.0 card.

The printers continue to operate okay through the 1.x ports. I would prefer to use the 2.0 ports for the photo printer and digital camera.

Did you try to uninstall the software like fudtone said? I believe, correct me if I am wrong, that some devices have different drivers (somethings have given me an option to install a 1.x or 2 driver) and if you uninstall and then reinstall if this is the case with your printer etc. then unistalling them might solve the problem.
