Another grease/pad question

Good day eh
Couple quick questions, assembling a system with a used cpu and mobo, previous owner apparently used a thermal pad and a dab of grease with the previous installation (XP 2200+).

PC store employee recommended not using grease with the XP, and sold me a piece of thermal putty tape. Are there supposed to be three layers of plastic on the putty? I pulled off 2, and assumed the third went against the heatsink, but the mobo shuts off after just a couple seconds, which seems to point to a heat problem. I had assumed the putty would be self-explanatory, but I'm still being outwitted here.

TIA
Mark

I would pull the "putty" off and use some Arctic Silver 5, it will work fine with the XP. If you have more of the putty you can try it again with all the plastic removed, I would assume that's correct. You can always ask the PC store employee, although I don't know why he would say not to use AS5

If hes anything like the people in our computer shop they will try anything, even to lie completely, to sell you something. My local shop doesn't stock AS5 so you would try to see you there alternative.

Some of the things the shop comes up with are quite funny, I asked what they recomended as a graphics card and for £35 they came up with a TNT2, of course I refused.

I went back and got another putty tape, they looked at me kinda funny when I explained that there were 3 pieces of plastic on it. Still having trouble getting that last one off the putty while it's on the bottom of the heatsink. Ah well, I'll keep messing with it for awhile. Thanks for the help guys.

If the shutdown problem persists, remove the "tape" and get some thermal compound (just get whatever is available, you don't have to use Arctic Silver 5), compound is much better at heat transfer than "tape" is.

Played around with the putty tape for awhile, didn't get a good layer over the CPU. Broke down and bought a syringe of thermal grease and it seems to work fine. Thanks for the advice guys.

On a slightly related note, anyone used a peltier (SP?) junction on their PC? A friend lent one to me to try out, feed it 5 or 12 volts and one side gets hot, other gets cold. Pretty neat stuff, might try it with my old mobo/cpu.

be careful with a peltier, they use very large amounts of power and can kill your system if you dont have a strong enough power supply. most people who runs pelts usually put them on a power supply separate from the rest of the system.

BTW, not meaning to hijack your thread Greedo,

Are Peltiers sometimes referred to as heat pumps?

Peltiers are electric heat pumps, not mechanical heat pumps like a refrigeration system.

if you can find one with the power supply, youll probably pay $150+ for it. theyre better suited for water cooling, air cooling doesnt have as much of an effect with a peltier.
