Question LED question

I have two fans with blue LEDs. One I had for a while and the other I bought new. The new fan's LED's were a really bright blue. Much more noticably so than the old fan's. A few months later, they're about the same dullness.

My question is, what happened? Why did the new fan's LEDs "fade"?

Well, it could be that the LED's are getting too high a current, whats your +12V from the PSU like (a bit high?)

That may cause progressive burn-out of the LED's over time.

Nope, voltages are good. The 12V line doesn't really stray from 12.023 and the 5V stays at about 4.972

If the light is still the same intensity, then I would guess the blue coloring is fading. If the intensity is lower, I'd attibute it to reduced voltage (which you say isn't the case) or just general fatigue of the part.

I've found blue LED's do fade a bit after time, maybe it's something to do with their construction, the colouring isn't defined by the case colour but by the chemical used in the construction so maybe that has something to do with it

Blue LEDs are actually the hardest, and the last, colour to be made for LEDs. It's a very interesting story actually, I recommend you look it up if you're interested.

Something I read online about the fading issue is that it's most likely to do with the power supply, rather than the LED itself. However, in your case I'm not so sure. You be the judge of that one
