Computer makes strange beeping noise
Lately, my computer has been suddenly shutting off and making a high pitched, irritating beeping noise. Does anyone know what this is or how I can fix it?

It would be helpful if you post the systems specs for your machine. CPU, mobo, PSU, Memory etc. along with Operating System. When you restart the computers do you get any POST beeps. How long does it run before it shuts down.
In the meantime, if your I would check to make sure that CPU is not overheating. |

Find out what BIOS you have (should tell you the make when you boot up, ie. Award, Phoenix etc.)
Go to www.bioscentral.com and look up the beep codes for your BIOS and it will give you a definition of what the beep code means. As your system is booting up and shutting down I would think the BIOS health monitor is shutting it down due to overheating

AMD Athalon XP 2100+
1.73 GHz 256 MB Ram SY-KT400 Dragon Lite (mobo) 280 gig Western Digital 7200 rpm, 8 MB cache Windows XP Professional Shut-off temp is set at 85 degrees Celsius Only does this when I'm encoding video files using Dr. Divx. One continuous beep until I unplug the computer, then makes a whining beep a couple seconds later. Just bought another fan to keep it a little cooler, but I guess it's not working that well... |

Sounds like your system is overheating when your encoding video files.
Do you have aftermarket cooling for your CPU or is it stock? |

85 degrees celsius is the default shutdown temp for my Soltek mobo for AMD, so I believe you have an overheating problem. You may need a better cooling fan if your using a stock fan. If you had it awhile you may have dust build up in the fins.

I have 3 fans in my computer, one on my processor, one intake fan and one exhaust fan on the case. 85 degrees is the temperature that my computer says it will shut off at, but according to a temp gauge I have, it's never gotten above 77 degrees...

Is that the bios reading or a different temp gauge? Also iif it is a different temp gauge, is it measuring the core temp of the CPU? I think that is what the mobo will use to shut down. At any rate, 77 degrees celsius still seems a bit close to the overheating temp for me. I should have said in my earlier post that the temp I set my bios to shut down for my Athlon XP 2500 Barton is 85 celsius. With two different PCs running only one case fan and one PSU fan, the temp never gets higher than 55 celsius that I am aware of. If yours runs at 77, when you start encoding video files it may spike higher. Are you using the stock fan or a separate fan.
One of my PC's started to overheat after a year and I replced the stock fan with a add on and it brought down the temps back to where they should be. Here is the fan I bought. As you can see I didn't spend a fortune on it. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...150-013&DEPA=0 Last edited by Karnevil9; 06-17-2004 at 02:38 AM. |

Well, according to AMD's website the Max. temperature (before killing the CPU) for an XP2100+ is 85 Deg C
Check your heatsink fan is working, also check your heatsink is held down properly on the CPU (are the clips OK) |
