CPU Stops after 10 - 15 seconds

Hi -
I have a Dell OptiPlex GX115 which had a faulty power supply which I replaced, along with the cpu fan which I also suspected.

The computer now hangs after starting the boot up process for Windows 98. I went into the CMOS setup and found that I could navigate the options for a limited period of time before the system would lock up. It appears to work fine for 10-15 seconds and then it stops responding in any way.

Does this sound like the CPU should be replaced? I don't want to replace components based on guesswork, throwing good money after bad, but I would like to salvage this machine if it is possible. Thank you for your help!

Since you can go into the BIOS for a bit, check the system temps. If your machine gets too hot, it may shut down automatically.

Dell's don't have temp sensors, I don't think. Is there any chance you installed the new fan for the heatsink incorrectly? Did you replace the complete heatsink or just the fan? Also, Welcome to PCMech!

It sounds to me like the heatsink is not sitting on the CPU properly, this would cause the temperature to rise rapidly and may cause the hanging.

I believe the CPU fan is installed correctly. I pulled the case off and watched it as I booted, and the fan was working right from the time it powers up and continued to work even after the machine locked up. I'm wondering if the CPU could have been damaged at the time the CPU fan stopped functioning?

I don't think overheating can still be the issue since it locks up in under 15 seconds - could it really overheat that quickly?

Thank you all for your responses so far!

Yes, definitely. Modern processors can overheat in just a few seconds. This sounds very much like an overheating problem.

Just because the fan runs doesn't necessarily mean the heatsink is seated properly. Touch the heat sink after it hangs. Is it warm at all? If not, then the heatsink may not be seated.

The chipset heatsink is another thing to look at.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It turns out that the heat sink wasn't seated properly...[kicks self] - when I went to reseat it, it popped right into place and the machine is running fine. I really appreciate the help with this!

Sara, as it wasn't seated properly it's probably worth removing it and re-doing the thermal compound or replacing the pad.
