I have an IBM G50 that I bought refurbished. Lately it has been acting weird. When I turn it off, the next time I turn it on, it just sits there with a black screen. The little green LED is lit, and Windows loads properly, but I can't see it. I have to turn the monitor off and on a bunch of times, and finally it will come on like it is supposed to. It always makes three little clicking/ticking noises when it comes on like it is supposed to, so I know that if I don't hear the noise, it isn't on like it should be. My brother said he thinks it is getting stuck in the degaussing mode. Is this something that can be fixed easily and cheaply? Or is it time to get a new monitor?

degaussing would mean a constant ticking but i don't think that is the case.
krank up contrast and brightness and try again is it still completely black or is it more grey now?
if it's black that means the warming up meachanism is broken.
If it's grey then there is something different going on.

Ok BambiX, I finally got around to trying your suggestion. Adjusting the contrast/brightness doesn not change the color of the screen. So is the warming up mechanism something that can be fixed? If so, is it worth it considering that I can get a 17" monitor at Sam's for $139?

I don't think it's worth fixing
but that's just my oppinion.
Just keep in mind that a good monitor can last you a long time and although not cheap they are a good investment for your computer.

I've been using a Samsung 700IFT 17" for close to a year now and have been really satisfied. It's listed for $219 on pricewatch now, but I paid well over $300 for it. Hope this helps.

Samsung definitely makes the best CRT's, no doubt.
So you can't get wrong with it
