Do you guys just follow the directions or do you have your own ways that differ and or works better
Also I have a question : To apply artic silver for the P4's all you have to do is put a half the size of a rice grain on it in the center? You dont have to spread it out or smash some into the heat sink or anything like that? |

Re: How Do You Apply Your Artic Silver

What I do is clean both surfaces really well and then wrap my index finger with plastic cling wrap. I put a small amount of AS on the plastic and then rub it evenly onto the bottom of the heatsink where the CPU will make contact. Then with whatever is left on the plastic wrap, I rub it onto the CPU die (the raised part of the CPU) as evenly as I can. For P4's you should try to cover the whole upper surface of the heat spreader as evenly as possible. Cricket

I use the instructions from the web site for applying Artctic Silver 5. They indicate that AS5 is different that previous AS products and doesn't require 'tinting' of the heat sink surface. On P4's, I've used the single drop method. On AMD's and a recent PIII slot 1, I place a small dab on the die and use a small plastic ruler to evenly spread it across the surface of the cpu die. I've had my AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Mobile chip oc'd over 2600MHz using this method and the idle temp is 45c. Here's the factory instructions:

I just put the half the size of a rice grain on the center of the P4 chip and lower straight down. I feel that the most important thing to do is to make sure that the heatsink and cpu are clean. Specifically if you touched the heatsink and cpu with your fingers, since the oil from your fingers will hurt the performance.
By the way, does anyone else feel like they are buying drugs when they buy Artic Silver? You get a little tiny container and the cashier asks you for $10. However this stuff along with my copper heatsink allows for my cpu to run at 32 degrees.

For spreading heatsink compound evenly i've always found that one of those spreaders that come with tubes of glue are ideal tools.

THIS guide shows how along with pictures. There is even a movie about applying compound in the Athlon guide but it doesn't seem to work anymore.

I just put a small amount (About the size of a grain of rice) in the center of the die and then I use the tip of the Artic Silver tube to spread it (Holding the tube upright). This leaves small ridges in the Artic silver as you work it, much like the ridges you get with an adhesive trowel. Then when you install the sink it allows it to even out into the thin layer.
