Problem With New Motherboard-Processer Fan Stops Spinning

Hi Guys!

I recently had a problem with my old motherboard...and so I purchased a new motherboard Gigabyte GA-8KNXP with Intel Socket 478, which is fully compatible with my previous processer Intel 1.8G Intel Socket 478. I also purchased new memory that was recommended from Gigabyte Crucial DDR PC3200.

The problem is when I turn on the power the processor fan stops spinning after approx. 2 seconds.

Also the system fan that came with the motherboard, the gigabyte P4Titan one below the processer...that one also stops spinning

Any help would be most greatly appreciated.

Welcome to PCmech,

From the description of your problem it sounds like it's power supply related. Are you using a good quality power supply or a generic one? Please post to let us know the make of your power supply. Generic one's often give trouble and can ruin a perfectly good system.

If you've got access to another PC so you can swap out the PSU to check and it's still problematic I'd look at the power switch (may be jammed)

It's probably a bad motherboard. I've seen this happen two different times on the same board. It was a bad motherboard both times. You can trouble shoot it, if you have a spare CPU, RAM, videocard and PSU.

Welcome to PCMech.

According to gigabyte your processor is supported by your new board ACCORDING TO THIS so that shouldn't be the problem. Although it most likely will need more power, and it isn't out of the question that you may have gotten a bad board too. What PSU do you have? And is it a brand name? Please list your system specs and we will be better able to help you.

I just went to Gigabyte's site again and was doing a little deeper digging. Your problem may also be your RAM, as according Gigabyte, something I didn't think of, your processor is a 400fsb, so you should be using DDR266. I got this from the Manual PDF that I am looking through. A 400fsb will only support DDR266, a quote from their online manual. This was from the bottom of page 5 of the PDF manual.

Hi,

Ok, if the memory is the root of the problem, then by taklng out the memory, the and just trying to power up without the video card, then the fans would not quit spinning...right?

Well, I took out the memory and the fans still do not spin.

Power supply is 650W and works on another computer, so I know it is not the power supply.

It's probably worth sending the motherboard back and getting a replacement, looks like you've eliminated everything else (except the processor - but that's unlikely) as you've tried to just power up the motherboard without ram and any cards fitted and had no luck.

out of curiousity.... do these fans have tempeture probes on them?
I recently purchased a HSF with a temperature probe that regulated the fan speed... when you first turned the system on it would spin up fine and then slow down and stop after a few seconds ... couldnt figure it out... then later I took it apart to replace the fan and saw the temp probe... it must have been bad so I just snipped the wire and shorted them together so it would run full blast all the time...
