I have a Shuttle motherboard AI61 that will not detect the correct memory size. I put in a one stick 512MB into one dimm slot and the computer show only 256MB. I then put in two sticks of 256MB and the computer still show 256MB instead of 512MB. Now, I put in just one stick of 256MB and the computer show 128MB. And finally, I put one stick of 128MB in and the computer show 128MB, the correct size. I have updated the BIOS of this motherboard. What are my options? What else can I do to solve this problem?
Any help is grateful! ljCharlie |

Are the sticks labeled with their capacity?

Ok, just trying to eliminate the simple things first.
http://eu.shuttle.com/ai61.htm I looks like your motherboard doesn't accept 512MB sticks. However, it does accept 256MB sticks, and being that the limit is 768MB, you should be seeing 512. Have you tried each 256MB stick seperately? There's a chance one might be bad. Also, what are the brands you are using? |

Many thanks for your help. I did try with 256MB stick and the computer only show half of that, unless I put in a 128MB then the computer will show 128MB. There is no brand lable on the memory that I purchased but I'm sure it has a correct size capacity. I just don't understand why the computer will only show half of the total memory on the stick.

What slots are you putting the memory in and have you tried it in different slots?
Are the 2 sticks matched? Are they single sided? |

I'm guessing that your board is fussy about single sided DIMM's.

I believed the two sticks are double sided; although I am not sure. How do I tell if they are single or double sided? My guess is that if one side is flat then it's a single sided, correct?
Yes, the two sticks do match. I tried all three slots and none works. Will reseting the CMOS help in this case? Thanks! ljCharlie |

HAL9000, you are right. I put in a double sided memory stick and it works just fine.
Thanks! ljCharlie |
